Hines Boats Lost In Lake Superior Tow Line Break

The Lizzie A. Law and the Selvin Marvin two Edward Hines Lumber Co. barges in tow of the steamer Edward Hines broke free during a northeast gale on Lake Superior near Huron Island. Despite a nightlong search, the coal laden vessels were not found and are feared wrecked near the rocks while bound for Duluth.

Sterns Lumber to Operate Thompson Mill Next Season

The Sterns Lumber company of Odanah plans to open the Thompson mill in the coming winter to salvage timber lost to August and September fires. They expect to cut about seventy five million feet and run the mill day and night, rehabbing it to employ about one hundred fifty workers on two shifts.

Attorney McLeod Heads North Trip For Flag River Railroad

Less than two weeks remain until election time as Attorney McLeod left yesterday to tour the northern part of the county in support of the Flag River Railroad Company. He will visit Cornucopia Herbster and Port Wing. Mrs J M Dodd of Ashland and Frank and George Morris of Pittsburg Pa visited friends in the city Monday. Miss Anna Swain visits Bayfield this week. Football fans joined the city team to Ashland last Sunday and aided in their victory. Rolland Duthie of Bayfield visited with friends in the city Monday and Tuesday.

Coal Shipments Signal Busy Week at Northwestern Dock

The Northwestern Fuel Dock saw a rush as the steamer Frank H. Peavey arrived with 7 000 tons of soft coal. A train load of cars was shipped from the docks, with 30 to 40 cars moved weekly during peak activity. More vessels expected as the season opens and overall handling rivals last year’s totals.
