An April election proposal asks to let current or future legislatures set salaries for successors above or below 500 dollars for two years. County Treasurer Alfred Froseth remitted to the State Treasurer the largest amount ever involved in the annual settlement with state authorities. The extra sum covers surtax for soldiers bonus, soldiers educational bonus and bond proceeds for direct taxes to pay soldiers bonuses. Amounts listed: bonds $53,743.60. surtax $86,113.32. state tax $41,991.71. surtax $133.00. municipal court fines $762.50. inheritance tax $146.03, totaling $182,890.16.
Ex Governor Frank B. Willis of Ohio and R. P. Hatton of Milwaukee urged concerted action to curb Bolsh 3 spread at a largely attended Wisconsin Anti-Saloon League dinner. About 200 citizens dined with the Citizenship Department and Congregational Ladies Aid prepared a splendid meal. A. W. McLeod chaired.
The annual inter county road school will be held at Ashland City Hall on Friday March 26. Officials patrolmen and local residents will join speakers from Ashland Bayfield and Washburn for a full program on roads including welcome by Mayor Chooge and talks by H C Hale H H Peavey and Nels Oscar.

Administrators of the Bates estate have sold the Bates store once operated by the late Luther Bates to Miss Helen Thomas. Thomas, long employed in the shop, is familiar with trade requirements and is expected to succeed in the venture.

Preparations are underway for a April 13 banquet by the D P A to honor DuPont Company employees. About 350 are expected, with music by the Northland College Quartette and local talent. M E Dillon of Ashland will deliver the address as the patriotic association closes.
Hears ofOil Beam W C Messenger secretary of Anchor Shipbuilding company owns 400 acres in northern Montana and may have oil on or near the land. A Mid west Oil and Refining Company proposal to lease has reached him, with several letters from different parties. Messenger seeks to confirm terms before leasing.
Six carloads of dynamite have already been ordered by Bayfield County dealers this season indicating farmers are prepared to boost production on idle acres. Past data shows eleven carloads were sold in 1919 with expectations of twelve or more in 1920. buyers include Washburn Bayfield Benoit Mason and River two-car purchases. Dealers and banks report strong interest in expanding dynamite sales as farmers recognize carload advantages.

At a Friday city council meeting, Dormer Bros. of Cedar Rapids Iowa won the bid to rent the old town hall on east Bayfield street. The building will be converted into a modern garage with renovations including tearing out partitions and a new concrete floor. Dormer Bros. will move to the city and begin remodeling after April first. The council expects the project to benefit the city by providing modern facilities.
A change in management at the Bayview Hotel occurred recently with Nels Nelson assuming charge and Oscar Plumpton retiring. Plumpton ran the hotel for several years delivering good patronage. Nelson, an experienced hotel man, previously ran the Nelson house for many years and is expected to do well.
F. W. Downs conducted business in St. Paul at the start of the week, engaging in activities typical for local commerce. The report notes his presence and routine transactions during the early days.
Forsyth Construction of Cameron Wisconsin, contractor for Bayfield county, moves to secure materials for two reinforced concrete bridges across the Sioux River at Bayview and over Thompson Creek to Washburn. Work on the Sioux River bridge aims for completion before spring traffic, with a temporary light-traffic bridge during surface paving. Construction will require part of April and May, with traffic detours and old-road use until the new bridge is ready. The Sioux River span is 50 feet long and 20 feet wide. the Thompson Creek bridge will begin when weather allows.
Mrs. Edward Finnegan died March 18 at Eau Claire hospital after a long illness of anemia. A New York native aged 67 years 7 days, she leaves Edward Finnegan and three sons Albert William Walter and three daughters Selmer Haugen Esther and Regina. A respected city matron, she was known for kindness and devotion to family and community.
