License Question to Face Spring Election

The coming spring election will include a decision on whether Washburn should grant saloon licenses next year. A petition is circulating to secure the necessary signers and will be filed with the city clerk once complete. Backing the effort is the Scandinavian Good Templar lodge which plans active campaigning to end saloon licenses. While a clear victory for no license is unlikely some expect a very close vote.

Barksdale Treasurers Complete Tax Settlement Record

Town of Barksdale Treasurer Barney Huff settled with the County Treasurer on a tax collection split. Of the total town county and state levy, all but 285.96 was collected, a strong showing for a town that hosts the dynamite plant and is among the county’s wealthiest.

Hayrack serenade honors Doyle couple on homecoming

Mr and Mrs Mike Doyle returned Monday from their honeymoon to a real old fashioned serenade and hayrack ride Tuesday evening. The Little German Band, composed of local players, provided music while the bride groom band and friends were taken around town. The event was organized by Wm Olson with help from band members.

Close Call With Freight Train Near Sundell Farm

A group of about thirty youths from this city narrowly escaped injury when a fast freight train bore down while returning from Sundell farm last Thursday evening. The sleigh could not move on a bare spot in the road at the railroad crossing, but once the sleigh was lightened the horses pulled free as the train passed. All members survived unharmed and call it a very narrow escape.
