This spring no judicial election will be held in the county. Town meetings occur across all towns on April fifth, and a city election is planned in the city. In previous years spring elections included justices, circuit judges, or municipal or county judges. The year still includes a September primary for all candidates and a November general election.
A circulation drive among settlers north of the city leads to Circuit Court steps to organize a new town from Bayfield Washburn and the city. Officials aim to complete the process within a year. Mike Larson reports a crew installing new piling at the city dock to restore first class condition.
The E. J. DuPont Powder Company plant south of the city turned out 144000 pounds of dynamite in ten hours marking a week of record production. The Washburn plant is noted as one of the best though not the largest in the United States.
G W Hacker withdraws as a candidate for postmaster and urges support for Mr Clausen. He cites business ties preventing acceptance if he wins. Postmaster Nelson’s commission expires April 6 and a new appointment is expected around May 1.
Window displays of Washburn Crosby flour shown in Corning and Raarup Bros. stores through the past week attracted considerable attention. The display was arranged by their agent E. C. Stevens and drew shopper interest.
Rev and Mrs Chatterson and the Methodist church official board hosted a reception at the church parlors on Friday night. Nearly a hundred attendees enjoyed discussions on various topics, a short program, and a fine lunch. Visiting pastors included Rev J E Cook of Ashland and Rev Alderson of Bayfield.
Friends report Dr F B Hicks and his family of Grand Marais Minn are well He serves as Superintendent of Grand Marais Hospital and has been appointed to the Minnesota State Board of Medical Examiners Mrs Hicks notes they enjoy reading the Times and keep in touch with Washburn happenings and people
Town treasurer O. M. Axness became the first to settle with County Treasurer Lien. He collected nearly all of a tax roll over 24000 dollars, leaving only 268 dollars delinquent. Reports suggest county delinquent rolls will be smaller than ever before.
Nels Westerlund Jr declares his candidacy for city assessor in the upcoming election on April 5. He pledges to perform duties to the best of his ability and ensure equitable assessments for all residents.
The St Louis Catholic Church youth group presents That Rascal Pat a farce at St Louis hall with a short program preceding the show. Cast includes Patrick McNaggerty John Dune Major Puffjacket Charles Livingstone Laura Puffjacket Etta Duffy Nancy and Pat. Admission is 25 cents to fund a new church organ.
Miss Willey of Minneapolis is hired as the new trimmer for Olson millinery. George T. Fox serves as a delegate to the First Minnesota Conservation and Agricultural Congress in St Paul March 16 to 19. The box factory stack was raised for better draft as production nears full capacity. City officials Walsh and Axelberg attended a state tax commission hearing in Ashland for town equalization.
A Ashland hearing on the Mason Iron River and Pratt appeal saw the tax commission chaired by Gilson Curtis and Haugen in attendance with Mason's C H Werden representing the appellants and Walsh McLeod and E Bergmann for opponents. Witnesses including William Landra int and George Mertz testified as the committee on equalization weighed a county tax increase above the supervisor of assessments recommendation. The decision was reserved with results likely announced in a few days. The day also noted Harold Geisert recovering from pneumonia, Clara Summerfield visiting from Cusson, and A F Delaney of Ashland considering moving here to pursue truck gardening after prior North Dakota experience.
The Delaney building on Washington Avenue undergoes a thorough remodel and will be ready for new fixtures soon. All woodwork was replaced, walls plastered and papered, and painting completed. Fixtures arrival is expected this week with a move planned around April 1st to create a neater office for patrons.
C A Long, injured at Stearns mill a week earlier by slipping from a tram and cutting a head wound, died at his west Pine street home Sunday at 4 30 PM. The funeral was held at the Methodist church yesterday with Rev Chatterson officiating, and burial followed in Protestant cemetery. Long had come to the city six months ago from northern Michigan and worked in the woods most of the time. He is survived by a wife and two children.
The Norwegian Lutheran Church announces services next Sunday in Norwegian with an afternoon 3 o clock Union Temperance meeting at the Swedish Mission church where city pastors will speak. Thursday evening includes a church communion service. Rev Christiansen and Pastor M C Anderson arrive from Orvisburg MS earlier this week. Hines Lumber closes southern operations others to the north. T M Smith of Wausau trades locally. Postmaster Nelson toured the Northern Pacific to Iron River. Miss Harriet Rummel returns from Wausau to Easter with her parents. Property swaps offered for sale by Robinson at The Times office.
Pupils from Washburn Bayfield Iron River Nelson Dewey Blaine Superior Spooner Hayward and Shell Lake prepare for the eastern division contest to be held in Iron River on April 15. Washburn will hold its preliminary around April 10 with entrants Bert Emberton Edward Plant Ellsworth Alvord Abe Segal Clyde Estabrook and William Cavanaugh. Edna Ungrodt and Joel Young will compete in the declamatory contest. Exact date and venue to be announced later.
