Funeral for Sylvester Erickson Held by I S W A Lodge

The body of Sylvester Erickson was laid to rest in the Protestant cemetery after a Sunday service at the Norwegian Lutheran church. The I S W A Fraternity conducted the services. Erickson, 37, had lived here six to seven years and was killed in the woods near Marinesco, Michigan while employed by Gogebic Lumber Co. He left no local relatives but two half brothers in Meridean,Wis. He carried a thousand dollar I S W A insurance payable to his brother in law in Norway.

Ripe Old Age Mrs Legacy Dies at 84 in Antigo

Mrs. Thomas Legacy died last Thursday at her daughter’s home in Antigo at eighty four after a general health decline. A former city resident, she was laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery after a funeral at the Catholic church. Survived by son John T. Legacy and daughters Mrs Joseph Bourasso Mrs Homer Brison and Mrs Dan Duval. E E Kenfield left Cass Lake Saturday afternoon.

Injured Man Falls From Tram At Stearns Mill

A. C. Long, of west Pine street, was injured Saturday when lumber shifted while he loaded a truck at the Stearns Lumber docks. He fell about twelve feet, striking the sleigh edge. his head was badly cut but he is now recovering.

Equitable Fraternal Union members enjoyed a social evening at the Odd Fellows hall last night. Ashland lodge members could not attend due to poor sleighing. The gathering featured card games amusements and a lunch.

Misses Francis Holberg and Esther Wedlund of Ashland visited in the city this past week at the home of Gilbert Brunness. Miss Wilhelm of Ashland spent a few days in the city visiting at the Hacker residence.

Nick Sorrensen Buys P. M. Olson Feed Store

Nick Sorrensen has purchased the P. M. Olson Feed Store on West Bayfield Street from long time operator P. M. Olson. The deal closed last week and Olson plans to leave soon for western Canada. Sorrensen, previously a grocer with Osten Anderson and more recently a farmer, takes over the business with optimism for its future.

Trimmings Pile Injures Renfield & Lamoreaux Worker

Sam LaFlamme, an employee of Renfield and Lamoreaux, was badly injured last week when a pile of trimmings fell on him while loading into a wagon. Initial fears included a possible broken back as he suffered heavy bruising and faces a long recovery.

White River dam powers Washburn Electric plant debut

On Sunday at six a m the Washburn Electric plant began receiving juice from the White River dam at Ashland. The current will run continuously day and night and power for the entire city will be available for all uses within a few weeks.

Tax rolls to be turned over as taxes near due date

City Treasurer Nels Lee and Town Treasurer Andrew Rockstad will hand over their tax rolls to the County Treasurer early next week. Taxpayers who have not paid are urged to hurry. At the North Wisconsin Teachers Association annual meeting in Ashland on Friday and Saturday, Superintendent S A Oscar will discuss teaching commercial subjects in high schools. Observers note Washburn farmers invest in mail service roads telephones and new homes as Bayfield county builds roads and a county tax funds improvements. Eight telephone lines extend to farming areas with subscribers while one new church is planned on the Long Lake road and schools support local families. The overall picture is rapid progress attracting land buyers to this farming district.

Fireproof block to rise in Bay field County using sandstone

A. I. Lien plans a fireproof block constructed with Bay field County sandstone. Work will start after frost and proceed quickly with a basement and cement floor, heated from below. The building, to be a city credit, aims to inspire others to erect substantial structures.

Hearing on Appeal Set for Ashland Next Tuesday

The appeal of the towns of Mason Pratt and Iron River against last fall's county board equalization will be heard in Ashland next Tuesday. A number of county board members will attend. City Attorney Walsh and City Clerk Axelberg will represent the city, while Chairman Bergmann and District Attorney Alvord will represent the county.

Bayfield and Washburn high schools played at the Opera House with Washburn girls winning 29 to 7 and Washburn boys losing 31 to 21. A social dance followed the games.

Wisconsin Citizens Urged to Join Conservation Association

Oshkosh March 7 The Wisconsin State Committee of the National Conservation Association urges public support for conservation work in the state. It highlights degraded farmland idle land underused water power underdeveloped forests and need for protection of fish game and resorts.
