P A Oscar issues a campaign message in Washburn promising no appointment promises government economy in public funds cautious public works strict law and order. He pledges to end concerts in saloons stop gambling enforce liquor laws for minors and bar illegal voting supporters.
Mrs. I B Hunt of Lime Ridge Wisconsin found relief from a severe stomach and liver issue after seven bottles of Electric Bitters. The tonic supposedly cured her and she avoided surgery now feeling healthier than before. The ad claims guaranteed results with a 50 cent price at Owen Frost Co. drug store. Holdings on tax certificates and railroad bonds dominate the rest of the page. The Bayfield County board delays paying interest on railway bonds and considers tax land sales with a March 30 decision outlook.
A stock company is organized to back the next season's baseball effort. About twenty enthusiasts attended, with G F McClintock named manager, James Tyrrell secretary, and Nels M Oscar treasurer. Shares will sell at ten dollars each, a meeting of stockholders was called for that evening, and initial subscriptions reported at seven point nine dollars.
L A Simonson announces candidacy for town treasurer. The notice states intent to seek the office and identify the candidate.
Citizens of Washburn are informed that Tim IXEARNS has entered the race for the office of Supervisor. The filing signals his candidacy and intention to contest the upcoming election.
A note lists Washburn resident Lam as a candidate seeking re election to the office of town treasurer along with L. O. Johnson in the same notice.
State Railroad Commissioner Graham L. Rice visited Washburn to approve the Hope Safety Device for the Bige low and Omaha crossings. The interlocken style device, similar to an interlocking switch, will be Wisconsin’s first of its kind and praised as among the best. Rice was joined by Wallace Winter and H. C. Hope of the Omaha line.
The Iron River fair organizers held a Friday night session and elected officers for the new fiscal year. A. H. Grimpo was chosen president, Ernest Sauve 1st vice president, P. J. Savage recording secretary, John Brady corresponding secretary, Byron Ripley treasurer, with Frank Wilkins named superintendent of games and races and James Heughens superintendent of the fair grounds.
The Congregational Church announces The Christ Mind as the Sunday morning topic with a hymn filled printed service for participation and a brief sermon by the pastor. The Sunday School is large with Juniors at three and Senior C. E. at 6 50 p m. Thursday prayer and Bible study follow in the lecture room. A piano musicale is noted at the Parsonage.
Early Tuesday morning John Ryan William Connors Thomas King and John Kelly were arrested for attempting to burglarize W H Lemkes dry goods store. After a loud disturbance and glass breaking the group fled but were captured later. Ryan and King were discharged at examination while Connors and Kelly remain in custody awaiting municipal court next Tuesday.
County board fray draws town reps from Mason Drummond Tron River Washburn Pratt and Bayfield. Quayle may not seek again Bayfield chair Currie Bell hinted as possible candidate Sauve likely reelected Tron River. Washburn mayor McBeath faces potential challengers. Pratt silent on plans.
A men’s social at Mrs. F T Yates home on East Fourth Street is set for Tuesday night March 20. The event features a menu of oysters meats salads and other refreshments served by the men under the America European plan with pay for what you get. Attendees are urged to bring their female companions including mothers wives sweethearts cousins and nieces and see how the men handle the gathering.
In a county institute scene the county superintendent asked teachers who took their local paper to raise hands. Of about one hundred, only six complied. He expressed surprise that educators expect free notices and reports while seeking advancement and pay.
