Washburn Wisconsin school board members resign in protest after the Common Council plans a 25 000 budget for 1921 22 claiming the amount cannot run the schools. Eight members including D W Davis C F Morris Elmer Oistad Olaf Olson Gust Lund and W Potvin sign the letter.
John W. Gibson and family escaped serious injury when their car narrowly avoided a collision with a freight train at the Bibon Hill crossing on Route 24. Mrs. Gibson sprained a foot, and Mr. Gibson injured a knee as they jumped from the vehicle. Kirke Gibson drove away and turned between tracks to avert disaster on a notoriously dangerous crossing near Bayfield County.
Miss Alpha Yderstad daughter of Jacob Yderstad Lincoln County Clerk and Mrs Yderstad and Axel Johnson of Ashland were married last Sunday afternoon at two o clock at the bride parents home in Lincoln Rev H Yderstad officiating The bride was attended by her sister Elenor Yderstad and Albin Johnson brother of the groom served as best man A wedding dinner and reception followed at the Yderstad home with over forty relatives and friends present The couple will reside on 3rd avenue west Ashland at home to friends after July 4th both are well regarded in their communities
City Assessor H. C. Koenig reports total real and personal property valued at $2,285,000 for Washburn, a slight decline from last year due to removal of Marshall-Wells houses. Population counts include 101 horses 168 cows 6 hogs 149 autos and 94 dogs. Long Lake near the city grows as a popular bathing spot with hundreds visiting daily. Esther Ford travels to Madison for university summer classes.
Thousands gathered from Washburn Bayfield and Ashland to watch the double end steel ferry Hudson Athens fail to launch after the boat stuck on the ways. Rivet heads in the ways are suspected to have caused the delay delaying the launch planned for last Saturday with officials and workers disappointed but hopeful the vessel will enter the water by tonight or tomorrow.
The Census Bureau reports 105,710,620 total in 1920 with 53,900,376 males and 51,810,244 females. Males outnumber females across states. exceptions include Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. District of Columbia has far fewer females. Western states show higher male ratios, Nevada highest at 148.4 males per 100 females.
Aaron Segal departed Roundup Montana to oversee business for Van Duren Oil Co. The company cleans out a well on its property and assigns several leases on a fine royalty basis, boosting stock and pleasing local stockholders.
George A Calder announces a well funded and full day celebration for the 4th in Washburn starting at sunrise with a salute and continuing with a Bayfield parade led by the American Legion Band. Prizes will honor floats and autos, followed by Rev. George Waters speech and potential remarks by a Washburn visitor. A Washburn vs Bayfield baseball game caps the day along with races, music, and shows for all.
Mr and Mrs Charles Moland longtime Three Switch residents celebrated their twenty fifth wedding anniversary Monday evening with about 125 attendees from the city and surrounding area. Rev Chr Christiansen gave a fine talk and guests enjoyed a bonfire and refreshments before the couple received silverware gifts.
F D Savage and O S Wilson families from Marshaltown Iowa enjoyed a week at Memorial Park camping grounds by the lake. They traveled by two autos and extended their stay beyond two days praising the site as one of the best along the route and urging countrywide promotion. The park offers a free camp area from the Omaha tracks to the bay with bath house fire pots tables and out buildings and ample trees after brush removal.
John E. Jones and his wife are expected this week from Washington D C for a visit with old time friends. Jones is noted as a former editor and publisher of the Times.
Dr. J. R. Mitchell, his wife, and daughter escaped serious harm when their Veile touring car skidded on sand near Four Miles Creek road and plunged into a ravine. The car rested on a stump, preventing greater injury. all were treated in town with the child and Dr. Mitchell injured more than Mrs. Mitchell.
In the ninth inning Scamfer bats for Earned runs and Boutcher Peterson hit by pitches. Corcoran Jones and Siefart relieved. Base on balls totals and several players registered mixed outcomes with 2 and 4 walks respectively. Home run by Corcoran and multiple hit types listed with time of game 2 10. Batting averages for Washburn players to date.
A speaker urged the council to dismiss actions and reduce the city legal staff by four or five of six attorneys to run the city with common sense, claiming the high school could then operate. Taxpayers responded "Aye-Aye."
Large crowds from northern Wisconsin attend Station Day at the State Experimental farm in Ashland Junction. EF Delwiche leads demonstrations on soil management pea culture and livestock production with experts Humphrey and Morrison discussing feeding and dairy cattle while farmers stage a dairy cow judging event.
Hans Swanby alderman of the Third ward and school board member files through Attorney A M Warden to cite President D W Davis and Secretary Elmer Oistad to appear in Circuit Court and show cause why they should not be restrained from issuing school orders in payment of bills. The school board officers began issuing wages and bills per a board meeting decision, and Swanby served a restraining order while still serving on the board.
W. J. Wilson of Miller Saw Trimmer Co. installed a Miller automatic press feeder in the Times office last week. The new device, operated with air, replaces manual feeder services and handles all types of commercial printing. Now in operation, the system is popular in large offices and places the Times among the best equipped in the region.
