A Washburn committee is raising funds and arranging events for a large Independence Day celebration. Meetings last week set preliminary plans and officials say Washburn will host a prominent Fourth of July event with a planned Eagle scream.
A special three coach train arrived at the Northern Pacific depot early Thursday morning. President Howard Elliot and a group of senior officials inspected Harbor Bayfield Street and other railroad features during a tour of the Northen Pacific property. Officials noted business across the system has been quiet in recent weeks.
Gust Wedin longtime Omaha railroad coal shed worker and Washburn resident died last Friday after a six month illness following an appendicitis operation at Rhinehardt hospital. He leaves a wife and four children. funeral at Swedish Lutheran Church with many friends in attendance. He belonged to the Independent Order of Foresters and held insurance.
The Congregational church Ladies Aid Society announces a fair on Wednesday and Thursday the 29th and 30th in the Bell building near the post office. Committees include Fancy articles Mrs Lamoreaux Mrs Alvord and Mrs Nichols Curiosities Mrs Smith Mrs Scofield and Mrs Moore Rummage Mrs Barker Mrs Lien and Mrs Sowder Bakery Mrs Frost Mrs Moore and Mrs Goedeke Ice Cream Mrs Bennett Mrs Holmes and Mrs Flynn.
Hudson Wisconsin June 19 Sheriff Harry Harris was killed aboard a eastbound train near Fall Creek while attempting to arrest a man linked to a Roberts hotel robbery. Harris, shot three times, died instantly as the desperado John Smith fled. A large manhunt, including hundreds of citizens and armed officers, followed with searches from Eau Claire to Augusta. The incident sparked a statewide reward plan and a wide police dragnet.
From June 9 to 11 inclusive the Omaha will sell tickets to Eau Claire and return at one third rate for round trip. Final limit for return until and including June 13.
The Republican National Convention in Chicago nominates Theodore Roosevelt for president and likely will name Senator Fairbanks of Indiana as vice president. A strong true Republican platform was adopted and the convention is expected to finish today or tomorrow. La Follette delegates withdrew after stating they could not secure a fair deal before the credentials committee, which was angered by administration men from Wisconsin.
Washburn organizes a ball team with Vernie Robertson as captain and Tim Kearns as manager, Frank Smith secretary. The lineup lists H Oscar Piether Burk and Smith as catchers, John Bolieau at first, Jack Burke at short, Geo Butterfield at second, W Robertson at third, A Johnson in right, Alex Legacy in center, and Harry Duthie in left field.
The committee on licenses will meet at the city clerk’s office on Friday June 24 1904. All spirituous liquor dealers are asked to bring in their applications promptly for action by the committee. R A Hering City Clerk.
The Wisconsin delegation at the Chicago presidential convention named A. W. McLeod of this city as one of the district delegates to notify the vice presidential nominee of his nomination. The honor is highly coveted by delegates.
Washburn school board seeks eight teachers with applicants to call on board members or send written applications to A. H. Hosmer secretary at box 411 Ashland. Board officers are Henry Moergeli president and Carl Hirch vice president.
