Methodist Church Celebrates Sixteenth Anniversary

Dr Forbes preached and lectured at the Methodist Church as the congregation marked 16 years. A debt sermon prompted subscriptions, yielding over five hundred dollars and aiming to refinance interest on the loan leaving a small remainder.

Indian Opera Powhatan to be staged by Ashland youth

On June 20 and 21 the Indian Opera Powhatan will be performed by Ashland’s young women group The Daughters of the King. The show blends dances and chorus with a cast of about one hundred including two high school glee clubs. Principal parts include Powhatan, Pocahontas, Capt. John Smith and others with admission at 25 50 and 75 cents. Tickets available at Fox Bros Drug Store and at the Ashland box office after June 18 Grace Merrill is manager. The Steamer Mary Scott will run return trips June 20 if at least thirty attend leaving 7 30 pm and returning after the show, fare 25 cents.

Ramsay Oversees New Dynamite Plant Progress

W G Ramsay chief engineer for the Atlantic Manufacturing Company visits the Bayfield county project in Washburn. He oversaw land purchase and plant location and expects dynamite and other explosives production to begin before year end. The plant marks a county institution tied to Ramsay’s early notoriety as the mysterious man with the red top boots.

City Council Adjourns After License Vote and Lighting Talks

The city council met Tuesday night to set terms for a special election on saloon licenses with a current fee of 500 dollars. They discussed purchasing the electric lighting plant, receiving a franchise proposal for appraisers to set a price, and sent it back to the committee for a firm proposition. E Bryan named keeper of the dumping grounds at 20 dollars monthly with land use at 50 dollars yearly. Dr Lampson’s salary as health officer and city physician fixed at 225 dollars annually.

Ashland Street Railway Company Considers Washburn Extension

At its annual meeting the Ashland Street Railway Company elected officers and discussed extending the line to Washburn. No definite action was taken and the company likely is not yet ready to build around the head of the bay.

Mellen Town Faces Power Water Lockout By Dispute

Mellen endures darkness and no water as the town board quarrels with the lighting and water company. The firm cut services after a dispute over contract payments. Insurance rates have risen by two and a half percent as the standoff continues. The town had attempted to buy the plant, but the company felt unfairly treated and ceased business with the town.

Gasoline launch Superior destroyed by explosion at Bayfield

Sunday morning a gasoline engine boat named Superior exploded after a match ignited spilled fuel. Engineer Nelson Cadraut was badly burned while the upper works burned. fire department extinguished the blaze after serious damage.

Wisconsin dog license ruling praised by attorney

City Attorney John Walsh says the dog license ordinance is legal in all respects and will stay as is unless someone sues to challenge it. Drunken Woodsman Errs In City Burglary Case

A lumberjack named Murphy forced entry to Miss Hoffman's kitchen and wood shed Monday night. In Municipal Court he was released after a drinking related hearing and ordered to leave the city. A separate farm house near town suffered a larger theft with several articles taken. two arrests were made but released as likely wrong suspects.

Fire Devastates Spooner Business District

A large fire in Spooner destroyed about a block and a half of the business area on Monday, costing around 60000 dollars. Local and neighboring fire departments used dynamite after three hours to halt the blaze.
