Madison Gov Blaine introduces a new prohibition bill to replace the vetoed Matheson measure. It preserves home use of alcohol for private consumption while banning unlawful sales. It extends Volstead Act supremacy, tightens searches, adjusts prescription limits, and empowers local officials to enforce licenses and penalties.
Kenfield Lamoreaux company plans to restart the big mill by late June or early July after necessary repairs. Plant manager Alex Gackowski says the mill will stock about four months of supplies, employing many workers and boosting city business for the season.
Madison June 8 The assembly approved the Morris resolution urging the U S secretary of commerce to advance the Great Lakes St Lawrence deep water project. The Werden bill on real estate liens for stumpage cleared lands was postponed. Camp Fire Girls of Bayfield vacationing at Estabrook cottage with chaperones Parson and Mathews.
Senator Herman Severson and Senator Henry Roethe urge abolishing multiple tax commissioners arguing the board costs over two million dollars in twenty years while a single head would concentrate control. Judge Charles D. Rosa opposes only on concerns about work done, noting potential savings may be limited. Governor Blaine backs the move.
The Bodin-Finstad Post American Legion sponsors a June 17 street dance and vaudeville starting 8 PM with the American Legion band playing. Everyone is invited and a good time is promised. A Wisconsin Tax Commission letter to City Clerk L. N. Clausen states the city’s accounting installation by Raglan & Pearce is flawed. It notes missing opening and correct tax roll entries and wrong account numbers, offering to send a municipal accountant to reinstall the records.
Sadness fills the James Morris home as Edith Morris 12 dies at St Joseph's hospital Ashland after an appendectomy for peritonitis. She attended a class picnic Thursday, valued music, and was the oldest Morris child. Funeral Tuesday at St Louis Catholic Church with Fr Bourcki.
The Bayfield County Board left the city on Tuesday morning for a three to four day inspection of state and county roads. Seven automobiles and the county aviation truck transport members as they visit planned and completed works to study conditions and data for future projects. The trip, authorized in May, aims to save money by revealing road needs and improving budgeting.
Madison June 8 The Wisconsin Finance Committee reports state revenues will cover expenses for the next two years with no new income tax. Proposed bills include changes to tax rates concealment repeal and dividend taxation. Totals show about 48 million dollars for the two years with specific annual allocations for charitable and penal institutions capitol building and care of the chronic insane.
A Commercial Club meeting in Washburn planned a big home Fourth of July celebration. Judge Geo A Calder was appointed in charge of arrangements and will form committees soon. Local business leaders were urged to cooperate for a memorable event.
Three hundred persons with a 40 man brass band and 80 motor cars will begin the sixth annual Michigan Pikes Association tour from Detroit on July 10. The 1700 mile itinerary spans Lake Superior with stops in Detroit Lansing Grayling St. Ignace Manistique Marquette Crystal Falls Ironwood Duluth Grand Marais Fort William Port Arthur Sault Ste. Marie and Lundens Camp before returning to Detroit via Bay City. A new feature will move the Port Arthur to Soo leg by steamer on the Noronic. Local committees prepare welcomes at each stop and the trip is billed to boost Upper Peninsula motor tourism and regional visitors. Detroiters file tour applications with Secretary Willard K. Bush.
The Joint Finance Committee recommended a biennial appropriation totaling 3 550 761 11 for normal schools with 607 326 45 for capital improvements including a new wing at Whitewater. Maintenance totals 103 406 12 and operation 2 840 028 54. University of Wisconsin is allotted 10 203 525 for the next biennium.
Mr. and Mrs. Jas. McIntosh and son Duncan from Superior spent the weekend visiting Mrs. McIntosh's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Burk. They, with the Burk family, drove to Cornucopia for a most enjoyable trip.
Northwestern Fuel company docks in this city will be stocked to capacity this summer says Superintendent John W. Gibson. Two coal cargos have arrived so far with more to follow as output and demand rise with East recovery and fall business. The revival should provide work for many men through the season and during winter railcar shipments.
Dr. Johnson of Madison reports 25 to 30 reactors among several hundred cattle tested in Bayfield County's Highland Settlement and Eileen areas. Despite past testing, many reactors were weeded out, indicating Bayfield herds remain largely tuberculosis free for Ashland's milk supply.
The K P Washburn team meets Saxon at home next Sunday afternoon after Washburn won at Saxon last week. Manager Ross predicts a tight game with his players playing airtight ball. The American Legion band will play throughout the contest and a good time is promised.
Opal Elexrude wins the cake and Electric Maid plans weekly 25 cent coupons. Beginning Saturday June 11 the first coupons appear allowing customers to trade them for 2 loaves of bread apple pie or cash at participating dealers.
