Axness of Mason Heads County Board in Bayfield Meeting
O M Axness of Mason was reelected chairman of Bayfield County Board at the organization meeting in Washburn. The Washburn News was named official county paper after several ballots. An appropriation of 5000 for the Pureair Sanitarium at Salmo was approved, with Ashland and Iron counties to match funding for costs and maintenance. Joe O Malley of Bayfield was elected trustee. The board passed measures for buildings, fair funding, a grain and potato show, and town fairs with matching local sums. County Nurse Miss Thompson received leave and vacation. Azure Baker Leighton Civically Active Resident Passes
Azure Baker Leighton longtime resident dies at Ashland General Hospital from blood poisoning after a finger sliver. Born Pembroke Maine November 27 1848 he would have turned 72 this fall. He served in the 8th Regiment of Artillery at Fort Jefferson and later worked for Sprague for 36 years. Survived by his wife a daughter Mrs Charles Anderson of Virginia Minn and a brother John Leighton. Funeral at Methodist church in Azure with interment Woodland cemetery.

New Government Wireless Station Planned on Devils Island
Messrs Shelover and Greenleaf inspected Devils Island property in the Apostle Islands and chose the site for a new government wireless station to aid Lake Superior navigation. Construction is expected to begin in July with several buildings to be added as the station is established for lake carrier communication and navigation support.

Northern Wisconsin towns plan delegation for International Joint Commission hearing
The ICW Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Deep Waterway hearing will be held next Tuesday in Ashland. Hines completes purchase of Willow River holdings
Edward Hines Lumber company of Chicago completes the purchase of Willow River Lumber including about 70000 acres of timber and the Hayward mill. The deal, not disclosed in figure, will run into six figures. Hines now operates three mills in the region with all workers on a ten hour day.

Winners of Wing Scholarship at Local High School
The Class of 1920 graduation at the Congregational church saw Geneva Kinney and Harry Moland win the Wing Scholarship prizes for highest four year standings. Fifty seniors received diplomas in a large ceremony led by F T Beers. Dr. Culbertson of Ripon College complimented the graduates and discussed government ownership and Bolshevism. A petition signed by over five hundred residents urged a June 15 special election on changing the school government to a district system to enable larger bond issues for a new high school, with women to vote.
