Three residents report losses after pickpocketing near Ashland and on a train between Ashland and Nash. Joe Hall of Bayfield lost a $100 pocketbook at the Omaha depot in Ashland. A $20 and $15 loss occurred on the Ashland to Nash ride. Suspect fled after alighting at Nash. officers search continues.
Hon. Gustav Kusterman of the State Board of Control visited Bayfield City early this week to inspect the county jail. His sole complaint was that inmates were too well treated and he argued prisoners should not have reading material or tobacco provided to them.
The text notes Sheriff C B Simpson praised for jail conditions in Wisconsin and Sheriff John E Sealey of Hurley attending the Sangerfest in Ashland. It reports the death of Mrs. Andrew Stever and sympathy resolutions by the S H E F A of Washburn. The town reports an unprecedented spread of thistles and noxious weeds this year. A worker is cutting them down, but officials consider that removal alone is insufficient and propose treating the affected spots with salt and other substances to eradicate the growth.
Mrs. Fred Scofield entertained about forty friends at her home Tuesday evening in honor of Mr. Herbert Scofield who has been visiting Mr. and Scofield. Cards dancing and refreshments constituted the main features of the evening and the guests enjoyed a very delightful time.
Thieves broke in through the back Friday night and stole $17 in cash and two suits from Segal Brothers store. Authorities say they are pursuing the robbers.
Washburn labor unions met Ashland groups and decided to join in the Washburn celebration. Bayfield and neighboring towns will also send delegations. The event is billed as one of the greatest in the city, with unions determined to make it a standout day.
The McCormack Lumber Company sent the first through fir timber shipment from Tacoma by the Northern Pacific to Mills-Gray Carleton in Cleveland. From Cleveland it will go by steamer, marking a shift to port handling for western timber. The move follows an arrangement with Edward Hines Lumber Company and signals future through shipments via this port. Catholic Fair for St Louis Congregation slated August 3 to 8 with a 163-member aid society, several managers named, and dedicated counters and activities planned.
Town warns cow owners the last time against letting cattle roam in the unincorporated Washburn. Cattle may be moved only between 5 and 8 am and 5 to 8 pm. any found roaming outside these hours will be seized by the Poundmaster and fines must be paid for release. By order of the town board. George Wilkinson awarded a siding contract of two and a half miles from the Omaha railroad through the dynamite company's property at Barksdale. Archie Donals of Ashland wins the contract to build six brick structures including the office. Grading and building work to begin immediately. forty three buildings planned now with more contracts soon.
The Times publishes a sixteen page special edition in October as the county’s most complete issue. One thousand copies are on hand at The Times office for sale at five cents each, with limited stock expected to sell quickly at Tuer Treg office.
Charles Ewer and M J Everson were married Wednesday evening at the bride’s home. Both longtime residents of the city received warm congratulations from friends. Reverend D M Sin clair officiated the ceremony.
