Carl Wedin, nine, was struck by a passing auto in Ashland on Monday evening. The driver did not see him in the darkness as a roman candle was fired nearby. He was dragged briefly, then taken to Dr Spears for examination and found uninjured beyond shock.
At the Opera House next Tuesday night the newly organized nest of Owls will present a minstrel show. Director Charles Payne, a professional, has guided local productions statewide for the past year. The bill features End men Bert Robinson John Westerland Tom Duggan and W T Mead with up to date songs and original jokes. The cake walk and dancing sextette promise lively novelty.
Louis Shapiro of Bayfield visited the city with friends yesterday. Mrs. George Scanlon of Ashland spent the past week visiting in the city. Rev. Father Fabian of Ashland visited the St. Louis church parsonage yesterday afternoon.

Nearly two thousand visitors from Ashland and nearby areas attended a Washburn hosted July Fourth celebration. The day featured a morning salute, an industrial parade, an oration by Hon. G. N. Risjord, numerous contests, and a decisive 16 to 2 baseball win by Washburn over Ashland. Local businessmen praised the turnout and future plans for a permanent Washburn organization.
Miss Agnes Fenenga of Mar din Eastern Turkey prominent missionary will speak at the Congregational Church next Sunday morning and evening. Services conducted under the auspices of the Woman's Missionary Society.

Two workers died in an explosion at the DuPont works near Tacoma Washington. Thomas Blake a Washburn student from the city and two other workmen were killed with Blakes mother in town. The incident reportedly happened last Thursday night or Friday morning. This marks the second Washburn boy lost at the Tacoma plant in three months. Eugene Whalen was the other victim. Mrs Aspel receives community sympathy.
Notice proclaims a mass convention of Democratic voters in Washburn Bayfield County at the Municipal Court Room on Saturday July 9 at 10 in the forenoon to select three delegates for the Democratic State Convention in Milwaukee on July 12, 1910. By order of the Democratic State Central Committee.
Forest fires raged in the northern part of the county around Cornucopia last week, causing substantial damage to standing timber. Thompson & Fleith Lumber Company lost about five hundred cords of bark and has kept a large crew fighting the flames since last Saturday as the woods stay tinder dry.
Farmers in Hay County report cutting underway with forecasts of less than half the normal yield due to prolonged dry weather. The drought spans northern Wisconsin and Minnesota, sparking field burn, abandoned hay plots, and many farmers turning to corn for fodder.
Local merchants in Washburn report unusually strong sales in the days leading up to the Fourth of July. Several stores claim the best single period in their histories as shoppers fill streets and show high satisfaction.

Church people are making arrangements for tent meetings in August with an evangelist in charge. Alice Taraldson left for Coleraine Minn to visit the Shoresman family. Others say we carry the best. The common council passed an ordinance requiring all milk dealers to test their cows for tuberculosis before selling milk. Dealers must obtain a license with charges of $1 for vehicle deliveries and 25 cents for carrier deliveries. Twenty days are allowed for testing and licensing. The meeting also set fees for motion picture shows, pool and billiard halls, and bowling alleys with the mayor breaking a tie.
Jack Burke sustained a serious fracture of his right leg above the knee after tripping over a chair on Monday evening. He will be laid up for an extended period as doctors treat the injury.
