The Bayfield Wisconsin Chautauqua runs July 7 to 12 with musical numbers lectures by prominent speakers monologues by known artists and daily community singing. Highlights include Patriotic Day with The New Glories of Old Glory lecture by former Senator Burkett and Music Day featuring the Chicago Boys Choir and Folk Songs illustrated lecture. Fourth of July Celebration Draws Crowds and Patriotism
A large crowd from outside points attended a war influenced Fourth of July in the city. The morning parade featured the City Band and a Viking Club float with a flag inscribed We demand freedom of the seas. Rev. O W Smith gave the keynote address at Bayfield street and 1st avenue, praised for its passion. Bayfield defeated Washburn in a later baseball game, with other races and fireworks rounding out the day.

Big 3 Inch Shell on Display in Window
A three inch shell like those used by Russians in World War I is shown in Amos M. Hanson's window. Owned by Ed Stevens and sent by his brother, superintendent at International Steel and Ordinance, the shell is a deactivated replica with explosive charge removed. When used the steel part fires a cap that explodes on impact. The weapon would tear trenches and kill nearby personnel if deployed.

Strawberries from Bayfield County were unavailable on July 4 due to a late spring and cool early summer. The berry crop runs about two weeks late but appears healthy. warmth is needed to ripen the crop.

Pioneer Resident Mrs Holmes Passes Away After Long Illness
Mrs. 8. J. Holmes, a pioneer resident of the city, died at her East 5th street home last Saturday after a year long illness from stomach cancer. Funeral services were held Monday at the late residence conducted by Rev. O. W. Smith, with interment in the city cemetery. She leaves a husband two sons Adelbert and Frank and a daughter Mrs. Oscar Jacobs.
Unusual patriotic song program at Washburn church
The Methodist Episcopal church choir under W Bridge Jones presents a patriotic music program next Sunday at 8 PM in Washburn. Prof Jones will sing solos with Mrs Jones at the piano. Admission is free and a silver offering will aid the choir that provides music for all services.

M. J. Wood and wife and children from Duluth are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. August Wood. Fred Morke bought a new Overland Model 90 Touring from Robinson-Oscar Co. New Plant At Duluth Skandinavian Under Hamilton
In Duluth Sunday editor called on William Hamilton former local resident now business manager and owner of the Duluth Skandinavian Norwegian paper. Hamilton has moved to new quarters on Superior street with a fine plant of thirty two machines including cylinder presses automatic jobbers stitchers and other up to date equipment. The paper has grown into a large prosperous business since Hamilton took charge.
