Council Grants Sixteen Saloon Licenses for City Revenue
An adjourned common council meeting at the Commercial Club rooms last Friday approved sixteen saloon licenses from seventeen applications, with Charles Nelson's being denied as he did not intend to operate this year. Named licensees include John Donahue, Charles Brunner, Andy Murray, Martin Larson, W. E. Bennett, W. E. Butler, Bernard Lee, Louis Holte, Nels Westlund, John Johnson, E. G. Bergen, Ed Skamfer, Louis Wardner, Octave Upeey, and Fred Lereaux. The council also granted a wholesale warehouse license to the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company in the city.

County highway board buys Case gasoline tractor
The road committee of the county board has purchased a Case Manufacturing gasoline traction engine for highway work. After demonstrations with two machines, unsatisfactory performance under some conditions led to the purchase. The tractor is currently engaged on the Iron River to Port Wing road.

Stump pulling machine arrives for Lovelane farm use
A large stump pulling machine arrived in the city at the start of the week and will be transported to Lovelane farm in section 31 for stump removal work. It features a big steam engine and drum cylinder for pulling stumps.

Third degree work was conferred on a candidate then a banquet. Miss Mable Pederson and Mrs E G Moore performed musical selections during the event. It was a very pleasant evening.

Wilson Chosen On 46th Ballot In Baltimore Nomination
New Jersey's Woodrow Wilson chosen on the 46th ballot at the Baltimore convention ending a four day deadlock. Wilson secured 990 votes to Clark 84 and Harmon 12 with two absent, as Illinois Indiana Utah Colorado and others shifted support to Wilson. Nomination was made unanimous.

City saves with curb work by city street commissioner
City Street Commissioner Joe Arseneau completed two blocks of cement curb along Bayfield street at 24 cents per running foot, a sharp drop from the prior low of 43 cents. The city takes control of street work this year and already reports sizable savings for taxpayers.

Deaths in Washburn: Peter J. Raarup and Others
Three Washburn residents died in the last two days of the week including Peter J. Raarup. Raarup born March 25 1856 in Schleswig-Holstein died Saturday night after a yearlong illness from kidney and heart trouble. He came to the U.S. in 1873, worked on railroads, then settled in Ashland and finally Washburn. eight children survive along with a widow and siblings in the U.S. and old country. Funeral was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Norwegian Lutheran church graveyard services conducted by Rev. Chr Christiansen.

Mrs. Chris Hanson died Saturday at 7 30 pm after months of aiaemia. Funeral held Monday at 1 30 pm from the home and 2 pm at Norwegian Lutheran church with Rev Chr Christiansen. Burial in city cemetery. She was 42, a resident here twenty years, mother of Mary 17 Peter 14 and Ora 11, and wife of the deceased.

Library Closed on Sundays in July and August
The city library will close on Sundays during July and August. Arthur Anderson returned Monday noon from Paulsboro New Jersey where he worked for several months for DuPont. Mrs Ed Demars and Mrs Eli Compo of Ashland visited the city last week. Demars received a $1000 check representing her late husband’s insurance in the Catholic Forest er lodge.

Vote Sought on City Lease to Bank in November
Petition presented to the City Common Council with sixty two signatures asks to submit leasing the city building to Bayfield County Bank to a vote in November. Council tabled the petition. An ordinance to license ferry boats using the city dock was discussed with final action set for next month.

Residents begin new cement walks on East Sixth Street

The Pioneer Association holds a semi annual meeting at the Commercial Club rooms next Monday evening and invites new applicants. The first annual picnic will be planned at that meeting. Washburn Naval Militia expects a Norfolk 4 inch gun to arrive early next week, part of a new model costing about 4000 dollars, with substantial equipment already received locally.
