Alexander Thompson, a machinist for A. A. Bigelow Co. and longtime Washburn resident, died last Sunday in Ashland Sister's Hospital after weeks of illness. A Masonic lodge member and Ashland Commandery knight, he will be buried Thursday at 2:30 pm from the Presbyterian church, with Masons and many friends in attendance. He leaves a widow and was 50, with family from Michigan attending the funeral.
Independent Order of Foresters entertained members and friends with a bountiful supper for about 300 people at the Opera House. Dr. Clark from West Superior gave remarks. The local Court of Foresters reports over 100 members and rapid growth in recent months.
Attorney McLeod, returning from Madison, reports the United States court has declared the claim presented for C. N. Cramer & Co. for 2600 dollars preferred. Labor claims for work within six months before the receiver ship are also preferred. Pike Lumber of Bayfield shows a 24000 dollar claim against the road, not likely to be among the preferred over receiver's certificates.
Report says Canadians in the United States who have not naturalized could be repatriated to Canada to face conscription and forced service with the British Army in the South Africa conflict.
Washburn Lodge No 110 AOA notes the passing of Brother John Starr a sober upright citizen and believer in charity and friendship. Resolutions express sincere sympathy to the bereaved family and authorize sending a copy to the Starrs and publishing in city papers and lodge minutes. G Terrill
The Agricultural Bulletin from the Agricultural Experiment Station Madison presents a 48 page illustrated guide on county road construction and maintenance. Based on J H Stout Menominee's funded practical macadam road work with USDA support in Washington. Free copies sent to readers requesting via postal card to Agricultural Experiment Station Madison Wis.
This year's taxes are ready for collection. Taxes running over January 31st will be collected under penalty of 3 percent. L. O. Johnson.
Washburn Wisconsin January 26 report on editor John E. Jones of the Washburn Times proposing a northern Wisconsin press association. A first meeting is to be held in Chippewa Falls in March with wide endorsements from papers across Bayfield Ashland Superior and others. The group aims to protect business interests of northern newspapers across counties aligned with the North Wisconsin State Fair Association.
The Bayfield Press warns against selling county tax certificates for village lots at steep discounts arguing owners could settle with purchasers for less than half the tax. It notes village lots lack assessment parity while broad acres held by the county may justify reselling to boost the tax roll and ease taxpayers burden.
Notice states John Halloran and John Love have dissolved their firm Washburn Ice company by mutual consent. Halloran will continue the business under the same old firm name in Washburn Wisconsin. Dated January 20, 1900. SIGNED John Halloran and John Love.
