Bayfield county Board members will be guests of the Washburn Commercial Club for a banquet and evening program at the Y M C A on January 19. The 6:30 PM banquet will be followed by films talks and social time to acquaint board members with city residents. Arrangements include lodging for visiting members during the road meeting.
Miss Dena Smith and Mr George Burke tied in marriage last Saturday at the parish house with Rev Fr Borucki officiating. Bridesmaid Miss Mae Miller and best man Mr Lawrence Miller attended. The couple planned a short honeymoon to Duluth and Eau Claire before establishing a home in the city.
The annual meeting of the stock holders of the Bayfield County Bank of Washburn Wisconsin will be held in their banking rooms on Tuesday January 13 1920 at 7 p m to elect a board of directors for the ensuing year and to transact any other legal business that may come before the meeting.
The notice lists Lutheran church services with English service in the evening on Sunday. Vikings meet Wednesday evening. A prayer meeting is scheduled for Thursday evening.

Union Club basketball team faced Ashland at the Y M C A gym winning 33 to 16. The first half ended 12 to 10 in Ashland favor with a strong second half by Union Club. Referee Remsen Bell called fair rulings and postgame dancing followed.
A 1919 letter to the Bayfield County Clerk urges that wives of alien husbands be prepared for the naturalization exam and that both petitioners and wives demonstrate sufficient knowledge to vote. It notes Wisconsin law granting presidential voting rights to women and calls for broad publication and education through night schools.

Bayfield County officials opened bids for the Soldiers' Bonus Bonds totaling 53,640.61 dollars and sold the entire issue to Bogler Mosler Willaman of Chicago for 53,650 dollars. The bidding was subdued, reflecting tighter money conditions.
Funeral planned for Grandma Spears, aged 78, of Washburn, after a four week illness. Born Agnes Buchanan McNair in Glasgow, she lived in New York State and Milwaukee before settling in Greenbush and later Washburn. Survived by husband J T Spears, two daughters and two sons, seven great grandchildren, and many friends. Funeral held at Congregational church, interment in Greenbush cemetery.
The Y M C A social committee plans a members only mixer for Saturday with an afternoon picture show for Juniors and an evening program for adults featuring movies, athletic events, refreshments, and lively activities. Admission is free for members and tickets accompany invitations.
Across from the YMCA A Beatzen offers dry cleaning dying pressing and repair services plus tailoring for ladies and gents. He can remodel or make new garments in any style for customers seeking custom work.
Mrs Monette plans a Monday night card party at St Louis Catholic church to raise funds for her quilt project. Neighbors and parishioners are invited to join for games and shared refreshments.
The Swedish Lutheran Church lists services through January with times in Washburn Bayfield and Ashland. Local pastor leads worship with sessions on January 11 10 30 am and 7 40 pm January 18 10 30 am and 7 30 pm January 25 10 30 am and 7 30 pm.
News arrived that Clarissa Johnson daughter of Mrs Frank Johnson died at Bramerton Washington on December 21 She was a member of the Beaver club in this city and Secretary William Goedeke reported the death The Johnson family has experienced three losses since moving west last summer Friends extend sympathy in their bereavement.
Take note Washburn has begun counting noses for the city census. Bernard O Sullivan and Mrs Kathryn Buzzard oversee wards 1 2 and 3 4 while Frank Gray covers wards 5 6. Residents must provide names ages and family details or risk arrest. Information is for statistical use only and kept confidential.
Bayfield County farmers from Bayfield Douglas Washburn Burnett Ashland Rusk and Price counties will exhibit at the Northern Wisconsin Grain Show in Ashland on January 24 1920. Prizes totaling at least 3800 in cash plus machinery and items will be awarded. Farmers are urged to bring a peck of grain for entry label sacks with Bayfield County noted.
A farewell surprise at Mrs Dun can Arséneau house honored Mrs Ed Moon who soon leaves for Virginia Minn to join her husband. A large crowd attended and a luncheon followed. Mrs Moon received a beautiful percolator as a gift. Mr Moon runs a barber shop in Virginia.
Local reports say oil may lie near Washburn in Bayfield county though deep glacial cover blocks certainty. Farmers Johnson-Rendin and Neame describe oily water at around two hundred feet with greasy residue, suggesting distant source through rock crevices.
