Bayfield County Names officer slate for Jan 2 start

New Bayfield County officers take office Monday January 2 with few changes from last year. Sheriff John A. McDonald leads a slate that includes Max Happle as undersheriff and deputies James Albertson Waburn W S Walcott Port Wing Harvey Ellerman Iron River and Sam Brewing Bayfield. Also appointed deputy county superintendent of schools is Miss Alice Greenwood.

Masonic Lodge Installs Officers and Hosts Social Evening

Members of the Masonic lodge and their families gathered at the Masonic hall on Tuesday evening for the installation of newly elected officers. After ceremonies they enjoyed dancing and cards followed by a luncheon, with all attendees reporting a pleasant time.

Wounded a Burglar by Former Washburn Boy in Minneapolis

Anfin Rockstad, once of this city and now in Minneapolis, was praised in the Minneapolis Journal for trapping and injuring a burglar during a drug store break in Minneapolis. Rockstad and a companion fired as a masked man crawled through a rear transom, the man was shot in the breast and taken to a hospital.

Obituary: Margaret Sands Made Home Across Several States

Margaret Sands widow of John Sands was born April 16 1847 in Martintown Ontario. She married in 1877 at Lancaster Ontario and later lived in Cumberland Wisconsin before settling in Washburn eighteen years ago. She died December 6 1910 after a life of strong character and devout Methodist faith. She leaves a son and three daughters and cared for three grandchildren since a daughter’s death. Funeral services were held at her daughter’s home and interment followed in Washburn cemetery with a memorial at the local church.

Infant Lilay May Lee Died After Illness

Lilay May Lee aged months and 7 days daughter of Mr and Mrs Geo Lee of east 4th street died Friday morning after a three week illness of pneumonia. Funeral services were held Saturday from the Catholic church and interment was in the Catholic cemetery. The Lee family has community sympathy in their bereavement.

Three Month-Old Joel Paulson Dies at Home

Joel Paulson aged three months son of Mr and Mrs Paul Paulson was found dead in bed Sunday morning after a frail birth. Funeral services were held Tuesday from the home with Rev Christiansen officiating and interment in the Protestant cemetery. The sorrowing parents receive much sympathy.

Florin Sezarish three months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Daniel Sezarish of Polish Hill died last Saturday after a brief illness with a severe cold. Funeral services were held last Monday at the Catholic church with interment in the Catholic cemetery.

Bromslau Komboiski aged 2 years 1 month 3 days, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Komboiski, died Wednesday morning from an illness with pneumonia. The funeral is set for today at the Catholic church with interment to follow at the local cemetery.

Three months old Genevieve Marsh died Monday after bronchitis and whooping cough. Funeral was held Tuesday afternoon with burial in the Catholic cemetery. Parents William and Mrs. Marsh, of Engee, mourn as three siblings remain ill and the community offers sympathy.

The Washburn Opera House hosted a Friday basketball clash where the visiting Ashland Whirlwinds defeated the hometown alumni 22 to 11. After a close first half the guests pulled away late, with a dancing party following the game and plans for more frequent matchups ahead.

Times Office Sends Holiday Greetings to Washburn Children

The Times handed out 470 holiday greeting coupons to Washburn children under ten last Saturday morning. Each child received a coupon redeemable for ten cents at local stores, with the paper collecting face value at redemption. The event ran from nine to twelve, with all waiting children receiving cards and each name and coupon number recorded.
