Many Homes Made Happy by Charity Christmas Gifts

Twenty three Washburn families benefited from a December 25 Christmas Eve distribution of food clothing toys candy and nuts funded by a December 17 charity entertainment at the Gem Theatre and a $25 Owl lodge donation totaling about $96. Mrs E C Alvord Mrs William Olson and Mrs Frank Arseneau led the distribution finding needy homes and ensuring children received gifts. Lew Anderson and family of Ashland spent Christmas at the Fox residence in this city.

Ten Month Old Mary Alegra Downs Dies After Illness

Mary Alegra Downs aged ten months and seventeen days died Monday after a three week struggle with typhoid pneumonia. She had earlier contracted pneumonia and, while recovering, fell ill again with typhoid fever. Funeral services were held at home and she is buried in Medford beside relatives. The Downs family received widespread sympathy in their sorrow.

Church Plans for Next Sunday and New Year’s Eve Supper

Services planned for next Sunday evening at the church. On New Year’s Eve the young people will serve supper at the church to aid Ed Wick who is ill in the hospital. The Men’s Club will meet Wednesday evening at church.

Installation of Officers at Masonic Hall Friday Evening

The Masonic lodge installs officers in an open ceremony for Masons and families at the Masonic Hall Friday evening. Afterward there will be dancing and amusements. Officers to be installed include M. C. Lincoln W., M., M. S. Hall S.W., Wm. Chamberlain J.W., OD. M. Maxcy Treasurer and George A. White secretary.

Elmer Oistad of Bayfield visited the city for several days in the forepart of the week. He is home from the University and spending the holidays in Bayfield and the city.

Dedication of Bayfield warehouse set for Jan 4

A Bayfield Farmers and Fruit Growers Association warehouse will be dedicated Saturday January 4 with a program featuring A W Sanborn Ashland E J Delwiche University Extension and W F Kern Bayfield. Washburn participants are to participate and the 4000 plus structure is described as a fine example of hollow block construction on the Omaha right of way near the Omaha depot.

Many Come for Coupons at Times Christmas Gift

A Times office Christmas morning distributed Christmas Greeting coupons to 422 children. Each child received a coupon worth ten cents redeemable at local stores. For three hours a steady line formed as kids waited, with the last coupon issued after noon. The scene showed pure holiday joy and appreciation for the gesture.

Merger Talks Cloud Independent Telephone Firms in Ashland

Independent firms in Ashland Bayfield Washburn Park Falls and Mellen plan a merger to keep local fields under independents while toll business remains with Wisconsin Telephone. Inventory work by engineers from both sides suggests deal far from closed and unlikely before next year with teachers from Washburn set for Christmas holidays across multiple towns.

Local farmer borrows to buy team of horses

Last fall an Oneida County farmer, previously on a small acre farm hiring a team at $4.50 daily, borrowed money to buy a team of horses. He has markedly improved his farm since the purchase.
