Capture Indian Accused of Murder of John Mealy

John Beauregard, a 35 year old Indian, was brought to the Bayfield county jail after confessing to killing his uncle John Mealy in Barnes. He described living in woods in brush wigwams while on the run, surrendering his weapons to Henry Holmes at Holmes cabin before turning himself in to Undersheriff Long in Iron River.

Benoit Farm Hand Held on Serious Charge

Federal and Bayfield County officers raided moonshine operations in western Bayfield County on December 14. Stills, mash, and finished liquor were seized, with Staples of Iron River bound for circuit court and Riley arrested. two large stills found at a shack near Iron River were destroyed.

County Man Held On Abduction Charges In Banked Over Trial

Andrew Kovachevich of Benoit remains in Bayfield county jail after a December 12 hearing before Judge Calder. He faces two charges carnal knowledge of a girl under 16 and abduction of a girl under 18, both carrying up to thirty years. Authorities plan to turn him over to federal authorities under the Mann Act. Kovachevich, 28, 5 feet 9 inches, 215 pounds, previously served time at Stillwater prison for highway robbery.

Wisconsin potato inspectors push marketing law prosecutions

Defendants pled guilty in six cases tests of the new state marketing law. The Department of Markets filed further prosecutions in Burnett Oneida and Columbia counties for potato shippers lacking inspection before sale. A Minnesota shipper case questions the department its power to apply state grades to interstate shipments. A Milwaukee market dealers convention endorsed the grading and inspection service by a wide margin. Wisconsin potatos fetch higher prices at terminal markets partly due to few rejections and the official grade certificate. U S Bureau of Markets reports show federal reversed state inspection in only fifteen of 2900 Badger shipments this season.
