New Year Officers Elected In Local Secret Societies

North Star Test No. 4 Knights of the Maccabees chose F. Bryan as Commander and P. J. Peterson as P. Commander with a full slate of officers. Other orders including the Independent Order of Foresters and Modern Woodmen announced elected officers and upcoming installations as December holidays approach. Foresters plan joint church service and warming in old house

The Independent Order of Foresters announce that the subordinate and Companion lodges will attend Congregational Church in a body next Sunday morning. The pastor will deliver a sermon for the occasion. A large stove will be added to heat the church through winter. The old church is worn and will be used one last winter before the new church opens next year.

Smallpox agitation ends as cases dwindle and reopenings begin

The small pox scare has largely subsided with only a few isolated cases. General quarantine has ended, lodges churches and public meetings resume, and Public and Parochial schools reopened Monday. The situation during the peak was greatly exaggerated.

Angora Goat Herd Started Near Bayfield Sells to Image Ole Reiten

About a year ago Bayfield residents formed a company and bought a herd of Angora goats placed on land near town. The herd grew from 100 goats after roaming unconfined over cut over lands, and has now been sold to Ole Reiten who will continue in the Angora business in Bayfield. The Bayfield Press notes the experiment has been a success and expects the goats to pay for their keeping as they are housed for winter and then released to cultivation lands.

Schools Reopen After Three-Week Closure

The public and parochial schools reopened Monday with about seventy five percent attendance. Teachers spent vacations visiting homes from Agusta to Oshkosh and West Superior. All are back at work and schools progress nicely.

Bay Remains Open as Ashland Side Freezes

The Ashland Press reports the bay on the Ashland side froze by December 8. The steamer Mabel Bradshaw visited and coal ed at the Fuel company's docks this morning. Navigation is expected to end today December 12th.
