A group of local business men formed to establish a permanent association and club room. They asked the city council to lease the old library building for headquarters, expecting the schools to surrender the space. The council set up a joint committee, with plans for a nominal rental and swift organization.
A furnace gas explosion sparked a major fire at Dr. Spears house in Washburn early Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Jones escaped in their night clothes after their dog alerted them. The furniture and goods suffered heavy losses estimated over $3,000, with $2,500 house and $1,000 contents insured. The dog died suffocated under a bed. fire crews saved the structure from total collapse.
City council acted to install fire escapes in all school buildings after attorney John Walsh urged legal risk from current lack of protection. Lincoln and Garfield schools cited as needing immediate escape improvements. Committee to reduce wards from eight to about five. aldermen to consult hydraulic engineers on water works purchase. sidewalks to be kept clear of snow. council adjourned to Saturday night.
John McKay of the Grand Portage reservation adopts Harry Manville, a Minneapolis orphan newsboy aged 16 but small in appearance, after four years of homelessness. The grateful boy vows to be good and leaves for his new home near Lake Superior.

A signed agreement from Fox Bros Pharmacy guarantees a refund of money spent on Greene's Warranted Syrup of Tariff if it fails to cure a cough or cold. It also offers a 25 cent bottle refund to prove satisfactory or money returned.

The Ladies Aid of the M. E. Church will host a fair and rummage sale at the Central House building next Tuesday and Wednesday. Supper on Tuesday and lunches Wednesday. Bargains on Christmas presents and clothing. support the church’s expenses by attending and contributing. Come to the Fair.
The revival meetings resulted in over a hundred converts with many already joining the church. Children among the converts will be organized into a class for further instruction. Services next Sunday include 10:30 sermon, 11:30 Sabbath School, 6:30 Epworth League, and 7:30 preaching.

The county board met at the courthouse for two days and created two towns Orienta and Oula. They approved purchasing a book typewriter for the register of deeds, set sheriff boarding pay at 2000 dollars annually, and voted 200 dollars salary for the chairman. They fixed the treasurer’s bond at 203000 dollars, authorized bonding of officials, and planned sale of tax certificates at face value. H S Fairall promoted a county school of agriculture and directors were elected. The board adjourned to meet January 23.
