Site chosen for Naval Training School at Lake Bluff

A Navy commission unanimously recommends Lake Bluff as the site for the proposed naval training school. The panel of three members led by Captain William H. Reed cites Lake Michigan location thirty miles north of Chicago as the preferred site with President Roosevelt's approval noted.

Mills End Season As Lumber Cut Falls Short Of Last Year

Washburn mills closed for winter after finishing season. Three mills cut 83 349 962 feet, well below last year’s 1035 940 897. Thompson mill exceeded last year by nearly four million, Edward Hines about forty million, and Akeley & Sprague below average. Hunting licenses set a Bayfield County record with 1402 issued, one hunting death reported.

End of Navigation Near on Chequamegon Bay

End of the navigation season approaches with ferry boats to run until the bay freezes. The Ira Owen hauled a car from the Washburn elevator on Tuesday, Parch Foster loaded yesterday, and the large steamer Elphicke is due today ending the lakes season for the institution. Three boats were at lumber docks this week with one more expected by Hines Lumber. Coal dock traffic was light. Insurance on lake vessels expires around December 5, after which cargoes head to Down Lake and winter quarters. Lake business was fair, though arrivals slowed after a pilots and captains strike delayed last spring.

Charity ball planned by Washburn boys for Christmas 1904

The city of Washburn schedules its first charity ball in years on December 9 at the Opera House. Under Corporal Hering and Company K leadership, proceeds go to poor relief with a ladies committee handling gifts.Tickets cost 1.00 and top musical and calling services are secured. Big Independent Order of Foresters Initiation Draws Crowd

Ashland hosts a large gathering of the Independent Order of Foresters with high officers from across the country attending Monday night. About 175 candidates were to be initiated but weather prevented a few from joining. 35 local members plus visitors from Bayfield and Iron River were present. Attendees included Zeno M. Host Col B F Parker A H Procter E L Stevens A W Brown and Miss Daisy Bu Schook. The event was praised as one of the best lodge gatherings.

Twe revival meetings led by Reverend Honeywell in Central House

Reverend Frank Honeywell of Chicago conducts revival meetings in the Central House drawing good crowds each evening. A special men’s meeting for all men and boys over fifteen is set for Sunday at 3 30 PM. Afterward he will move to Hurley to serve as minister of the Methodist church.
