Narrow escape for canoeist adrift in Squaw Bay cave

K. L. Shiris, a Canadian summering at Bayfield, spent a night and part of the next day marooned in a tiny wave beaten cave off Squaw Point after his canoe capsized during a storm. Exhausted and wounded, he wrote his obituary on rock and was revived by Cornucopia fishermen who spotted him from a nearby boat. He was brought to Bayfield for treatment.

Saxon Team Set for Big Weekend Clash with Washburn

The Saxon and Washburn baseball teams meet Sunday in what locals expect to be a top game. Washburn, having lost twice to Saxon 4 to 3 in one game and another close defeat, fields Corcoran on the mound with Spinky Carlin behind the plate. Washburn’s lineup aims to avenge the defeats with a powerful slugging attack and solid teamwork. The crowd’s size is urged to boost the Washburn effort.

Miss Blanding Named Washburn School Superintendent

Miss Pearl Blanding accepted the Washburn school board’s offer at 2500 dollars a year and will arrive soon to share duties with the existing superintendent. The city may face a two superintendent arrangement and possible court action to resolve the contract issue with C. E. Hulton. A baby boy was born to Mr and Mrs Ed Johnson of Clinton Iowa.

Four Washburn Teachers Quit Ahead of New Superintendent

Four teachers resigned from Washburn public schools ahead of the opening of the new school year under incoming Superintendent Miss Pearl Blanding. The list includes Miss Bowles English teacher at the High school, Miss Sugars principal of Garfield and first grade teacher, Miss Zehe and Miss Corrigan grade teachers. Several more resignations are reported as pending, raising concerns over filling vacancies with about two weeks until opening.

Charley Wolff's presence of mind saved his life when boys tampered with a yard switch causing pony trucks to drop and drag him. He grabbed the engine and hung on until it stopped, avoiding serious harm. He resumed work days later as authorities seek the responsible youths.

Pretty home wedding of Jennie Forde and Arthur Anderson

At the home of Mrs Marie Forde on East Fourth Street Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock Miss Jennie Forde became the bride of Mr Arthur Anderson. Rev Chr Christiansen officiated with Miss Esther Forde as bridesmaid and Phillip Kinney as best man. A wedding dinner followed and the couple departed for a three week honeymoon to Minneapolis LaCrosse and Iowa. Both are well known in Washburn with strong family and friend circles.

Cow Mangles Train as Owner from Salmo Reports Fatal Demise

Laurie Nourse of Salmo owned a valuable cow that attempted to butt the Omaha Scout last week. The cow was reduced to mince meat after colliding with the engine, derailing the locomotive and piling onto the car cass. A crew took two hours to recover the engine.

Madison County Highway Commissioner John Friberg has ordered all advertising signs along federal state and county highways removed from the right of way within 1000 feet of intersections. He says the signs cause motorist confusion and cites a state law banning such signs.

Travelers Visit Milwaukee Fond du Lac Marshfield Madison Camp Douglas

Mr and Mrs Frank Arseneau and Mr and Mrs J P Jacobson returned from a motor trip visiting Milwaukee Fond du Lac Marshfield Madison and Camp Douglas. At Camp Douglas they saw Gov Blaine and a 25000 strong review including artillery infantry and cavalry. In Fond du Lac they attended Major Trier s funeral with about 300 soldiers present and his horse from France marching at the service.

Du Pont Nitrate Shipments planned to arrive this week

The Du Pont Powder Company expects the first of three boatloads of nitrate of soda to reach the docks late this week and seeks 135 workers for Saturday morning signups. About 5000 tons will be unloaded at the docks, stored at the soda storehouse in Barksdale, and rail transported.

New Lutheran Pastor at Washburn Installed

Rev. Walter Mehlberg, called from Shawano Wisconsin, will be ordained and installed by Rev. O Hattstaedt at St Johns Washburn next Sunday at 10 A M in German.
