The National Council of Defense and the State Council of Defense urge all mercantiles associations to organize and reduce deliveries and expenses during wartime. Bayfield county actions credited with saving manpower, while others risk government action if groups do not collaborate.
Residents report a strange taste in city water provoking rumors about contamination. Officials say the lake source dominates most supply while the reservoir, used only at night, is clean. wind shifts are expected to improve taste soon.
W J Tweedin arrives in Ashland to lead Bayfield County Telephone in Bayfield. He starts system improvements and plans to have a crew here next week to boost service quality as the new watchword.
Washburn school board votes to discontinue German as a taught language and substitute French or Spanish. A resolution was passed Monday evening, reflecting a trend seen in many U S schools nationwide.
Open air union services held Sunday at the Edward Olson summer cottage near Long Trassle led by Rev. Chr. Christiansen of the Lutheran church. No Sunday school. Ladies Aid tea hosted by Mrs. Olof Olson at the church Wednesday afternoon.
Street foreman Joe Arseneau began repairs after contractor Wolley failed to fix the paving along Bayfield street. The city resumes work and bondsmen will be held liable. Breaks occurred at expansion joints and will be widened to accommodate summer heaving that caused the damage.
Professor V E McCaskill of the Superior Normal School will speak on Practical Patriotism at M E Church on Thursday August 24 at 8 PM. Music by local talent precedes the lecture. Admission is free and the public is invited.
Miss Ethel E. Grip and John W. Biby both of Minneapolis united in marriage at the Methodist parsonage on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. H. L. Goodrich officiated. Biby is employed at the DuPont plant nearby and the couple will reside in this city.
The Times releases a 268 page edition this week noted as possibly the largest ever from the office. It contains all laws passed at the last Wisconsin Legislature session bound for reference and filing.
Three Washburn men Rinard Johnson Clay Robinson and Guy McCall report being robbed Tuesday evening by a masked highwayman. Each was relieved of his change as they were held up at gunpoint. the robber’s identity remains unknown.
Ellsworth Alvord of this city, son of Mr and Mrs E C Alvord, has been named second lieutenant of cavalry in the U S Army. He recently completed a course at Fort Sheridan training school and received high markings.
The County Exemption Board has been screening about 180 more men for a 67 man quota. Over three hundred have been examined since Monday with many certified to the District Exemption Board as non-exempt or non-discharged. Names listed include George Hare, Carl Henderson, Hermann Spiegel, and others from Bayfield Washburn and surrounding towns. Deserter penalties may apply to those not appearing for examination.
Citizens in Washburn donate to a mess fund for Company D Sixth Wisconsin as they head to training camps. Funds exceed 140 dollars with new subscriptions pushing toward 150 and possibly above 200 dollars. The drive began with a military ball at the Opera House raising 135.75 dollars, aided by Robert Affleck Roy Markham and Secretary Heermans of the Commercial Club.
County Agricultural Agent W. E. Brubaker arranged trips to Ashland Junction Experimental Farm for Bayfield and Washburn farmers. Twenty eight from Washburn and thirty six from Bayfield attended, with tours led by E. J. Delwiche and Mosback from the University of Wisconsin, showcasing crop breeding work, crop rotation, and the value of winter wheat rye sowing dates. Brubaker urges more trips, notes canning peas offer high per acre returns, and invites volunteers for a poultry show and future tours.
The Washburn Wisconsin Red Cross chapter lists officers led by President Nels Myhre and Vice President William Olson with secretary H P Axelberg and treasurer M H Sprague. It details executive, finance, and numerous committees for base hospital supplies training publicity and membership with many named members. New members will be appointed soon and voluntary work urged for women to help at Red Cross rooms.
At a special meeting the council voted to accept C. T. Welch Company’s asphaltic concrete bid of 2.15 dollars per square yard and push the project this season. Three members opposed. city to cover one third of the cost as on Rayfield street. Welch promises completion within about thirty days after work begins once grade, contract and bonds are approved.
Moquah assemblyman Walter A. Duffy was present Tuesday to be examined for military service by the County Exemption board. He also reported crops in town were doing well.
Auto accident near Barksdale leaves Ronald Fluck Edwin Larson and Lawrence Wachsmuth badly bruised. Fluck says he was driving slowly but the car tipped on a crowned road, rolled over, and trapped the others beneath before he freed them.
