DuPont to Erect New Y M C A Building in Washburn

DuPont Powder company plans to build a 50 by 40 foot two story Y M C A on the site of the former F T Beers Club at Bayfield Street and Central Avenue. The facility will serve plant employees and city youth and be turned over to the National Y M C A with on site supervision. The project reflects strong corporate welfare efforts following a previous Y M C A in Barksdale camps. Separately, an Overland car driven by John Renstrom collided with a team led by Thomas Holvick near 8th Avenue and Bigelow Street, damaging the car and injuring the men and one horse.

Robbery at Cumberland House sparks pursuit and arrests

A burglary at the Cumberland House led to a chase as one robber fled the front door while a partner escaped. Walter Veno pursued by car and helped capture the man near Library corner. both suspects were later caught at the duPont plant and jailed as burglary charges were filed.

Soldiers on leave visit home during war training

Degree of Honor Lodge instituted in Washburn

A Degree of Honor Lodge was instituted in Washburn on Monday evening July 29, organized by State Organizer Mrs. Mae Fambach of Superior. Ashland Lodge members attended and talks were given by Organizer Fambach and others. Officers named to oversee lodge affairs include Past Chief Josephine Tutsch and Chief of Honor Hattie Taylor, with Minnie Miller as Chief of Ceremonies and other positions listed.

Big Wisconsin curb and gutter project launches in Watertown

Lehman Brothers of Watertown win the contract for a city wide curb and gutter upgrade to begin within days. The work, the largest of its kind in Wisconsin, will take about a year with minimal street disruption as traffic is managed. The district will be laid out by the Board of Public Works starting from the city center.

Ford car rolls over embankment near Barksdale school

Arnold Bergmann drove a Ford with Frances Oberts and Rose Klock as occupants when it toppled twice after leaving the embankment near the Barksdale school house last Thursday. Oberts sustained back injuries, Klock was scratched and bruised, Bergmann was only slightly injured. the car was not badly damaged and all three escaped serious harm.
