County Board to Elect Chairman at First Meeting

The county board plans its first meeting at the courthouse on Tuesday April 23 with a special session called. Six new members join the board this year and the key task is electing a chairman who will appoint committees for the ensuing year and oversee departments.

San Francisco Earthquake devastates city and kills hundreds

An earthquake lasting three minutes struck San Francisco early yesterday causing millions in damage. Buildings collapsed in business and tenement districts, fire followed, water mains broke, and a large portion of the city faced possible wipeout. The quake was felt as far as Nevada where telegraph lines suffered. Trout season opens May 1 with local anglers optimistic despite fishing restrictions until May 25.

City Council Opens First Meeting With New Board

The city council held its first session last Tuesday at city hall with many new members. Officers were elected including President T A Oscar and Clerk R A Hering. Committees were named and measures discussed to cut costs and improve city government.

May Means Line to Port Wing

A land company has optioned the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Ashland road to expand to Port Wing. It owns large tracts in Wadburn and Port Wing and seeks settlement access. Port Wing town voted to bonus 20 000 to 30 000 dollars for a connecting road. The Wisconsin Lumber and Cattle Company, offices in Esterville, Iowa, likely holds the option and owns 20 000 acres, a mortgage of 80 000 dollars, cattle, a saw mill, and other property.

KENFIELD LAMOR Eaux Box Factory Expands Operations

New improvements and machinery at the Kenfield and Lamor Eaux box factory in Washburn have boosted stock handling for bolts bought from local farmers. The firm plans a second small industry nearby, with ground already provided and a factory building to be erected soon. The commercial club oversees the project and more details are promised next week.

Three Pipe Lines for $3,000,000 Sealed Power Plant Job

John Bergstrom will lead a Canadian project at Kekebaka Falls to build three cement reinforced concrete water pipes four miles long ten feet in diameter and a power plant with five German water wheels. The $3 million job will take about three years with 600 to 800 workers. Hans Hagen will serve as carpenter foreman. Bergstrom may proceed to Niagara Falls for a larger future project with eighteen foot diameter pipes.

Commercial club probes Larson Shoe Co prospects

At a Commercial club meeting last night members resolved to thoroughly study the C P Larson Shoe Company of Eau Claire and its potential to locate here. F J Meeham left for Eau Claire to investigate as club representative and sentiment on offering the old town hall for a factory. An entertainment by the High School Athletic Association is set for Friday at the Masonic hall.

Peterson and Hanson plan large brick block on Bayfield corner

Builders will replace multiple stores and shops occupying the Peterson Hanson corner with a 125 by 100 foot two story brick block. The second floor will hold offices and a 50 by 100 foot opera house. Washburn brick and central heating will be used. P J Peterson leads the project with strong confidence it will materialize.
