Smith and Reed Favored by Western Leaders
Western politicians view New York Governor Al Smith and Missouri Senator James A Reed as the leading Democratic presidential hopefuls. Reed likely carries Missouri and may gain Kansas support as party organizations build, with discussions of him as possible running mate Vic Donahey of Ohio. The anti Smith bloc in 1924 has shifted, reducing talk of McAdoo and bolstering Smith.
