The Hip Sings and the On Leongs resume hostilities after three years of peace in American Chinatowns. Detectives in New York doubled police presence as bodies rise to five in Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York while front-line chatter fills Chinatown bulletin boards.
Philadelphia Oct. 16 A Republican ward leader named Matthew Patterson goes to trial after Chief Justice Robert Von Moszkisker refused to delay proceedings. Patterson is accused of receiving graft from saloon keepers and faces a grand jury indictment for graft.
The submarine S-4, recovered after sinking near Provincetown last December with forty lives lost, returned to active duty at Portsmouth New Hampshire as a tester of safety devices. A simple flag-raising marked the occasion.
The all metal dirigible arrives in the United States on Monday as plans unfold to replace gas bags. The U S Navy is building a metal dirigible, while enthusiasm grows for air travel between Europe and America. Hoover odds shift with heavy New York registration and Wall Street bets.

The body of John D. G. Fry, Yorkana cigar manufacturer and poultry enthusiast, was found in a chicken house on his farm after a gunshot was heard. Mrs. Fry heard the shot but did not investigate. Authorities believe Fry likely died by his own hand.
Col. Emilio Herrera head of Spain's air service told United Press the Graf Zeppelin flight marked a step toward regular trans Atlantic passenger service between Spain and South America. He spoke in New York after arriving from Lakehurst, confirming plans to lease the Graf Zeppelin for Spain to Argentina routes.
Public Service Commission approved a one man operation plan for North Warren street cars. Superinten dent Fenstermacher said the change would start within a week. The line now uses two crew per car after track improvements replacing the old Sheffield line.
John O'Brien of Venturetown grows a Gigantic Tasmanian bean in his garden. The 18 inch long bean is described as sometimes reaching eighteen pounds, enough to feed a family of seven with leftovers for breakfast.

Chief Biehl was said to have acted unbecomingly at the Homeopathic Hospital when police Patrol driver Martin Dengler was admitted there after Dengler had been shot by several youths in a stolen automobile
Jackie Crogan a juvenile movie actor has been ill and bed bound since yesterday in Paris. He is expected to be well enough to leave for New York late tomorrow.
Herbert Hoover returns from Boston to Washington and plans a New York campaign stop Monday night. He seeks Massachusetts 18 electoral votes, praising tariffs and criticizing Alfred E. Smith. At Symphony Hall he speaks to an overflow crowd, hinting he might be elected president.
Benjamin Strong longtime head of the New York Federal Reserve Bank died today in New York City after a long illness. He was 56 and served as governor since the bank’s inception. Born in Fishkill-on-Hudson he rose from clerk to president of Bankers' Trust Co before leading the New York Fed. He married Katherine Converse of New York.

Thirty gaily decorated cars with 100 Roosevelt Highway members sped toward Erie via Warren despite rain. Warren members planned to join the parade here around 3.30 pm as Merle D Boutwell and Emory Cook of the Chamber of Commerce coordinated booster efforts. Four or five Warren cars were to assemble on lower Market Street to issue banners and prepare to join the caravan after its Scranton start at 7:30 am.
East Side Business Men's association approved window stickers for membership and formed an advertising solicitation committee led by H. M. Mohr and Merton Kline silver. The group will focus on civic and business activity on Conewango Creek East Side and limit ads to a shoppers news publication distributed to all East Side homes. Fourteen members attended.
Conshohocken Pennsylvania October 16 thieves stole seventy chickens planned for a church supper. The sponsors swapped ham, drew a large crowd and the church doors had to be closed. Despite the switch the women reported higher profits from the ham sale.
The 47th annual session of the Western Pennsylvania synod of the Presbyterian church opens in Grove City with welcome by Dr. W. C. Kettler of Grove City College. Reports from church council and national mission committee await delegates as business sessions begin tonight. A docket revision committee led by Dr. Ben McGemmill of Philadelphia starts updating the synod schedule.
Max Daus a 55 year old confectionery store owner shot himself at the Elks club in Sharow Pennsylvania. He died shortly after at Buhl hospital, relatives said, due to health and financial troubles.
Sheri Offerle, florist, was elected president of the Warren Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America at the annual dinner meeting. W. E. Lutz was succeeded. new officers include Richards, Schellhammer, Alexander, and Wickstrom. Dalton Bell shared hunting reels from Alaska and Loren L. Bishop spoke on the state forest bond issue.
At the general Episcopal convention bishops sparred over a proposed Fourth of July prayer and related readings. Brewster opposed the text as stoking old animosities, while Remington and Cook urged recognition of the union's spiritual birth. The changes passed by one vote and align with the New Orleans convention. For the first time the church adds a prayer for the souls of the departed lifting the previous view that such souls are merely in God's hands.
Captain Norman Koehl who flew the Bremen on the first successful east west Atlantic crossing sent a cable to Dr Hugo Eckener praising Count Zeppelin and greeting the achievement.

Repairs begin on a damaged stabilizer hole while preparations for a return crossing to Germany continue. Dr Hugo Eckener and crew stay at Lakehurst as New York officials plan formal receptions.
