Hazleton May 9 One engineman Harry Cunius aged 45 was killed and 26 passengers injured when an electric train derailed at St Johns near Hazleton. Cunius burned to death in the wreckage while rescue workers listened to his screams. he had a leg burned away by high voltage. Officials say he failed to take a switch, causing the collision that set roofs on fire.
Mrs. Bert Cross of Tidioute and Burgess W. C. Tompsett visited Oakland cemetery to ID a body found yesterday on an Allegheny river bar. They ruled out the son, who drowned on a ferry in winter. officials doubt it is an Indian. The corpse shows about a month in the water.
In Congress today the Senate takes up a compromise flood control bill and continues debate on a tax reduction measure. The presidential campaign investigating committee reviews Secretary of Commerce Hearer. An agriculture sub committee advances the cotton investigation. The House begins consideration of a government corporation to operate Muscle Shoals and harbors, while hearings on Great Lakes channels persist.
Two airplanes will carry passengers on the Walters Flying Circus tour in Warren starting Friday. Fred D. Walters, owner, flew from Oil City to arrange the event. Mrs Walters serves as Irvine correspondent. Pilots "Sandy" Underwood and Br. Litzenberger are expected to arrive, offering free rides via Tribune promotions with a $5 value.
Pittsburgh May 9 A politically controlled rum ring operation in the city is under federal grand jury scrutiny. Over 50 witnesses testified as proceedings stretched past midnight with further sessions planned. Officials say the inquiry remains highly secret and indictments could be announced within 24 hours.

Lieut Royal V. Thomas and aeronau tical engineer Vaughn Weatherly were killed when a Bellanca speed test plane crashed at the Teterboro Golf Club grounds after departing from Teterboro airport. Thomas, famed for a solo endurance mark eclipsing Lindbergh, had been attempting a world endurance record on Long Island. The aircraft turned over in a barrel roll and plunged, crushing both men who were difficult to extricate from the wreckage.
Members of the American Legion gather for a final 7:30 PM report meeting after a campaign described as a big push against the enemy. Commander Ben Kinnear proclaims The Legion Never Fails as leaders hope for victory and a new community center home with units bought at $100 each, while Warren’s citizens are thanked in advance for their support.
Wheeling, W. Va. May. John Brandon aged 50 president and James A Brandon 46 cashier brothers were on their way to Atlanta to serve a ten year sentence in the Atlanta penitentiary for misappropriating funds of the First National Bank.
Indiana primary results show Senator James E. Watson leading Herbert Hoover by about 25,000 votes with 2,795 of 3,610 precincts reporting. Watson 152,201 to Hoover 128,892, securing Indiana's 33 Republican national convention delegates. Oscar Foellinger, Hoover’s Indiana manager, concedes the race as a Watson triumph.
In Beaver Falls Pennsylvania two boys, Jack Moclack, eight, was fatally injured and Henry Zachardery, ten, seriously hurt after a shell they found in an alley exploded. The McGlacker boy died at Providence Hospital. Zachardery said the shell was picked up on the way home from school. Police recovered shell fragments and believe it was a British eight inch by two inch trophy from World War I lost or discarded in the alley.
General Umberto Nobile plans to remain at Kings Bay Spitzbergen for a month and tour polar regions in his dirigible state whenever weather permits. He said a first flight may be delayed beyond Friday due to necessary preparations.
Philadelphia May 9. Sheriff Thomas Cunningham must go to Washington to stand trial for contempt of the senate. Federal Judge Dickinson ruled he will be tried for refusing to disclose where he obtained fifty thousand dollars he contributed to the primary campaign of Senator-elect William Vare.
Warren High has been approved for membership in Accredited Secondary Schools of the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools of the Middle States and Maryland. Principal Floyd W. Bathurst was informed that the Commission on Secondary Schools approved the admission by unanimous vote. A list of accredited schools was enclosed. The commission will assist Bathurst, and Warren materials will be sent to maintain a clearing-house of information on the Accredited list. The chairman's office is at 109 Bennett Hall, Calvert of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
Campaign logs show Alabama delegates at large leading the Democratic national convention race with an uninstructed Houston delegation. Delaware and South Carolina conventions push uninstructed delegates or oppose Smith or any wet candidate. Texas counties indicate support for a dry plank and dry presidential tide.
May 9 dispatches report Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist troops ordered to stop fighting as China faces outside danger while Japan mobilizes along Shantung and Yangtze fronts. Tokyo signals possible general mobilization and confirms reinforcements toward Tsingtao and Tsinan. Desultory fighting persists near Tsinan Fu with small casualties as readers are advised the story continues on Page Five.
Edward Seifred aged 50 of Sharpsburg Pennsylvania was killed today when struck by a Pennsylvania railroad train at the nineteenth street crossing in Sharpsburg.
