Triple breach in levee blows to save New Orleans
Three blasts opened gaps in the Poydras barrier below New Orleans to divert floodwaters. The breach threatens 600 square miles of territory, displacing about 5000 residents, endangering industrial sites at Violet and St. Clair, and sinking a railroad line as backflow swells toward the city. An airplane photograph shows the damage and rising river.
