In Fairmont West Virginia rescue crews recovered seven more bodies from the New England Fuel and Transportation mine at Everetttsville after an explosion Saturday. With 18 bodies already recovered, the death toll stood at 25 at noon as the effort continued amid carbon monoxide gas. Robert E. Thousands evacuate from lowlands to bluffs across the river while more are warned in Voyelles Parish near Echo. Rescue and relief offices mobilize under former Governor John M. Parker as navy craft and privately owned boats aid the emergency.
New York May 3 The Pulitzer awards of 1926 split by region honor midwest and northeast for journalism while the east and south prize literary works. The Canton Daily News won for public service after the Don Mellett assassination. Rogers of the St Louis Post-Dispatch earned the reporting prize. Boston Herald led with an editorial on Sacco-Vanzetti. Other winners include Paul Green for a New York stage work, Bemis for Pinckney’s treaty, Bromfield for Early Autumn, and Leonora Speyer for Fidder’s Farewell.
Secretary Kellogg and Senator William King of Utah clashed publicly over policy toward Turkey as reporters watched. The exchange, brief and tense, ended when Hoover brushed a paper from Kellogg’s shoulder.
In Harrisburg on May 3 James F. Woodward of McKeesport was sworn in for a third term as secretary of internal affairs. He was re elected in 1920, first elected in 1918, and joins Henry Fouck as the only others to serve three consecutive terms. Governor Fisher and cabinet attended the ceremony in a floral filled room. George J. Faulkenstein presented Woodward with a radio as a gift from McKeesport friends. About 20 residents witnessed the oath along with Mrs Woodward and her daughter.
The Tutérplate Window Glass Company under receivership for two years was sold to J. B. Angloch of Kane for 660000. Agents Crile of Clarksburg and W Ve assisted the reorganization committee. The deal included factories at Smethport Mt Jewett Huntington Weston Kane Clarksburg Okmulgee.
Warren welcomes around thirty Methodist Episcopal church leaders from the United States and abroad for the semi annual board of bishops meeting beginning at 10 a.m. in Founders Hall at Market Street and Second Avenue. In Pittsburgh on May day Rev Frank Edwin Smith liberal Bu chet Memorial Evangelical church and Rev Dr John Ray Ewers of East End Christian church showed no interest in a challenge from Rev J D Waters of First Christian of Homestead. Waters sought a meeting at any time or place to debate. Dr Ewers defended Dr Santh at East End church while Dr Smith answered questions in a forum.
The Warren County Ministerial Association met at the YWCA building with twenty four members and guests. Reverend Raymond Muthard of Sugar Grove presided as vice president. They approved three summer Bible schools to be held in center town east end and west. permission was sought to use the Fourth ward school. Each unit provides its own teachers and training emphasizes religious activity over vocational work. A banquet planning committee was named and a nominating group selected. Bishop Mead of Denver spoke on Coming of the Kingdom, and the federation urged support for Red Cross relief, voting twenty five dollars. Out‑of‑town attendees included G G Myers of Pittsburgh and bishops Burns, Theatore, Mead, and Leonard.
