Birds do not fly at great heights in migration says aviator record

Austin Texas June 2 The belief that birds reach 16 000 feet during migration is challenged by airplane pilots records. J G Burr notes observers have seen birds at 5 000 feet and pilots report up to 8 000 feet. High flyers include black plovers and yellowlegs, with geese ducks and pelicans recorded 3 000 to 8 000 feet and up to 15 600 feet when crossing mountains. In WWI birds were observed higher still, with geese at 9 000 feet and storks at 20 600 feet guarding mountain screens.
