Five Die As Car Plunges From Overhead Crossing
A car crashed through the iron guard railing on Scotts overhead crossing and fell 25 feet onto the old Werren Youngsville road. The driver reportedly was not travelling fast. The vehicle crossed the bridge, scraped the right side, and went through the railing at the center of the S curve. A corry motorist who followed said the car began weaving seconds before it jumped the 18 inch concrete abutment and smashed the ceiling. The overhead crossing had seen numerous minor incidents prior. A crowd of 300 gathered within an hour. Corpl Constantine and Patrolman Otter handled traffic and assisted with the dead and injured. None of the occupants were thrown from the car. Emil Peterson arrived with the first ambulance and helped transport the injured. The injured were taken to the hospital in private cars. Maurice Smith survived but his wife and family, his mother, and three others were listed among the deceased.
