Bobby Jones retained the 2 stroke lead after 36 holes at St Andrews Scotland with a 140 total. Welsh champion B Hodson moved to 142 after a 70 round as Kirkwood and Kennett trailed. Hodson overtook officals by 3 80 p m and Mehlhorn and Anderson were eliminated from further play.
Washington reports a cooling trend tonight and tomorrow as general thundershowers sweep east of the Mississippi, easing the heat without promising a cool spell. Yuma Arizona led the nation at 108 while Phoenix and Red Bluff hit 106. In Pittston two drownings and a heart attack tied to the heat were reported, with Carmel Azolino and Louis Wagner among the deceased.
Indianapolis Ind July 14. Governor Ed Jackson denies he was blackmailed over campaign financing by D C Stephenson life prisoner in Michigan City. Stephenson said to have given $2500 for a saddle horse and gear, a claim Jackson calls false and never repeated. Rumors of a special session to address the matter circulated, with lawmakers asked for input on potential action.
July 14 reports say over 25,000 anthracite miners are idle after the Lehigh Falley coal company closed all its collieries. Officials attributed the shutdown to the annual mid summer slump in coal demand, denying heat as a cause.
A dwelling fire at Clarendon and an incident at Glade division of United Refinery caused burns to two men. A. Bauer of Grant Street, a fireman, suffered burns when a boiler head blew off during cleaning a recently cooled unit, while Glade Run worker was severely burned escaping a fire swept home after a boiler incident.
