Six dead and dozens injured as a tornado ripped southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. Austin reported five fatalities and over $500,000 in damage including a new $250,000 theater destroyed. Relief workers and cut lines hinder early casualty totals.
In Pittsburgh on August 21 a baby girl was born to Clara M. Smith 32 of Wilkinsburg while she was in jail awaiting trial. Officials said they did not know her condition and she kept it secret hoping for bail. Also reported a Stamford man Coleman C. Moser was fined $25 for speeding and urged public praise for the arresting constable.
Hoover argues for full Colorado river water and power development and the Boulder Canyon dam, noting no talk of government ownership while Wall Street watches. A racehorse metaphor contrasts a yearling colt with a moneymaking sire, and the piece pivots to a forthcoming Governor Smith speech and continued public debate.
The Warren County Motor Club designated Ludlow Garage and Wildcat Service Station near Ludlow as official garages. Both are run by R. E. Wenstran in McKean County, extending service toward Kane on Roosevelt Highway. Tony Iskra, 30, was killed after being struck by a street car in Johnstown.
Warren borough and county schools will open on September 4 with announcements from Principal Floyd W Bathurst and Superintendent H S Blair. In Balboa Canal Zone August 21 five crewmen recount a fierce storm that sank fourteen aboard the William A. McKenney after a voyage from San Francisco toward Boston Philadelphia and Baltimore. Captain Rose led six men to safety as a colossal wave engulfed the deck washing overboard the rest. The American Star also faced the storm with minimal damage but was forced to dock for inspection.
Col George W. Harvey died at his Peacham Vermont home after a heart attack and prior illness. He gained notoriety for the Wilson discovery claim and later played a role in Harding’s 1920 nomination. He edited the Washington Post briefly and served as ambassador to London, dying at age 64.
Chicago August 21 George E Brennan Democratic leader who died August 8 left a 300000 estate to his wife and daughter Mary with 50000 trust funds established in 1925 for his retirement from politics.
Dublin, Aug 21. Gene Tunney arrives Thursday aboard the Mauretania. He asked John McCormack for a quiet, unostentatious welcome and calls his visit a pilgrimage to a sacred shrine. A procession is planned through the streets from the depot to the Gresham hotel.
York area Hendersons, long Democratic, staged a family reunion straw poll showing 88 vote Hoover and 6 for Smith. A. F. F. Smith, descendant, reported the result from Warren as confirmation of a Republican turn in the family.
Edward Fulton, 43, a carpenter of Johnsonburg and father of eleven, lies in extremely critical condition at Kane Summit hospital after falling about twenty five feet from a scaffold while repairing the Valley school at Farmars Valley near Kane. He suffered three broken vertebrae, a fractured ankle and finger, and severe bruising. Fulton had recently returned to work following a two week home rest for a rusty nail infection.
Superior Win August 21. Calvin Coolidge accepted Herbert Hoover’s resignation as secretary of commerce and named William F. Whiting of Holyoke Mass as the new secretary. Whiting, 65, president of the Whiting Paper Company, is a longtime Coolidge ally and Massachusetts political figure. He will depart for Washington to assume the post after a private oath in Coolidge’s office.
A notice in the Prosric want ad columns tells of a family of five left destitute after losing their life savings of 2600 dollars yesterday on a bench in Mount Morris Park New York. They beg the finder to return the bag containing the money and offer a 300 dollar reward.
Two bank messengers were seized in a taxi in Chicago and robbed of $19,000 by five men in a blue sedan. The bandits forced the drivers to the curb and fled with the bag, police offered no clues.
New York reports four nations join a Davis Straits search for Bert Hassell and Parker Cramer, lost en route to Greenland. Coast guard Marion reports severe northwest storms hindering rescue. SOS ambiguities and radio intercepts guide a northern search as authorities widen efforts to locate the missing aviators.
A weather note for western Pennsylvania shows thundershowers this afternoon and tonight with cooler readings in the north. Wednesday brings fair conditions. Observations include a high around 78 and evening precipitation, with river reports and sunrise values noted.
