Washington August 5 plans were devised to impound every Pennsylvania ballot in the election contest between Democrat Fillian B Wilson and Republican William S Vare. Senate Sgt at Arms Dayal Barry will request the president judges of the court of common pleas to hold the ballots and county commissioners will hand them over. Letters signed by Ware and Wilson will urge preservation until Congress votes transportation money. Philadelphia and Allegheny ballots are in the Capitol basement under guard. Representatives for Vare and Wilson were present. Vare was absent.
Chicago dispatch notes Frank C. Lowden former Illinois governor returns to Alexandria Bay after 1300 miles of travel for talks with western supporters. Despite active clubs and favorable sentiment, he takes no active steps and remains an inactive presidential possibility amid Coolidge retirement.
Altoona Pa Aug 5 A special Tyrone Lewistown picnic train of 400 railroad workers their wives and children was disabled at Petersburg when a wheel broke causing a halt without a wreck. Several women and children were slightly bruised during the incident.
Alexandria Va Aug 5 Postmaster J J Sangster of Burke Va perished in a blaze that gutted his general store and post office while he tried to rescue mail and postal supplies. Firemen found him with a foot caught in twisted wire as building owner E G Dune escaped safely believing Sangster had also escaped.
Charles A. Lindbergh arrived in Dayton at 12 53 pm after a flight from Wheeling West Virginia. An elaborate program including aviation discussion with Orville Wright and wreaths at Wilbur Wright’s tomb was planned. Earlier he hopped from Langin Field Moundsville after christening the first plane built there the Lona Eagle by Moundsville Aircraft Company.
James Ahern, 54, of Media, died after spending 18 years in Philadelphia General Hospital. He was paralyzed from a 1909 wagon accident and forced to live on a hospital cot. Despite his condition, he maintained a cheerful disposition and helped others as best he could.
In Dessau Germany Aug 5 by 62 hours 25 minutes Resticz and Edsard broke the earlier American endurance mark held by Clarence Chamberlin and Bert Acosta in a Junkers plane They landed at 10 15 am amid jubilant scenes as the lord mayor and notables congratulated them and crowds hoisted the aviators aloft The aircraft met all tests per Junkers statement and proved its Atlantic crossing capability
In Greensburg Pennsylvania eight people escaped a Hempfield Hotel blaze by leaping from second story windows. The hotel was destroyed with damages estimated at ten thousand dollars.
In Masa Aug 5 a Plymouth VT-born woman Mrs. Lestina Prudence Johnson, age 200, celebrated at her daughter Mrs. Royal Pettigrew’s home. Though she sports bobbed hair, she opposes woman suffrage, calls herself a staunch Republican, and has never voted in any election.
Chicago Aug 5 A box of cigars left at Chief OConnor's office revealed jewelry worth about 30000 dollars. He suspects Howard Nathan planted gems in Mrs Sophie Smith's bag to mislead investigators about the holdup of Mrs Mildred Cummings of Long Beach NY and her sister. The two women, visiting Michigan, had sought a cabaret tour with Maurice Harris and Harry Davis. The holdup occurred after leaving a night club.

New York August 5 UP Clarence D. Chamberlin the Trans Atlantic aviator announced he would attempt to recapture the air endurance record set with Bert Acosta. It was broken today by two German fliers. He said a ship like the one used three months ago could fly 70 hours without stopping.
