Gary Indiana April 20 Initea Press Thirteen men were injured when two Gary street railway cars collided head on Both cars were crowded with passengers and both were engulfed in flames causing a near panic before an orderly evacuation. Most injuries were described as minor and superficial.
In New York April 28, Ruth Snyder and Henry Judd Gray prepared for defense after the state rested. Mrs Snyder expected to testify next, while Gray sat immobile as prosecutors' case concluded with key witnesses. Adjournment was taken to allow defense motions, with opening statements likely tomorrow.
April 8 United Press report from Sunbury states forest rangers lead a mountain search near Mifflinburg for Biddle Wood 57 a Philadelphia iron founder family member who disappeared Monday while fishing. District Forester B B Winter heads the effort hoping he is alive but fear he may be dead in the rugged terrain.
Harrisburg April 28 James L Stuart Secretary of Highways announces Connell has resigned effective May 1 with no clashes in opinion and royal support from the department transferred to his successor.
United States correspondent reports Mrs Virginia Vanderbilt formerly Zair filed for divorce at the Seine Tribunal after consulting her lawyer. The judge questioned reconciliation as required by law. she insisted on divorce, and the court agreed to consider the case. The Vanderbilts had planned mutual suits but she demands a divorce favorable to her and both remain in the United States side of the Atlantic.
Three bandits attacked a Quaker City Taxicab Company cab as it entered a garage. They slugged cashier William Hirsch after a payroll of 2200 dollars was stolen and held driver William Curran at gunpoint. Hirsch resisted, was stunned, and bandits fled in a waiting car.
WARWISBURG April 24. Twenty three acts approved today by Governor Fisher include five measures sponsored by Rep Whitehouse and Schuylkill, repealing five obsolete statutes. An act empowers district attorneys to take fingerprints and maintain records with state police cooperation. City police must provide daily fingerprints and photos of criminals to state police. District attorneys may hire fingerprint experts with compensation set by the county DA and approved by the court of quarter sessions. Also approved is a Harris measure capping withdrawal fees from building and loan associations at one percent of par value. BRIDE ASPHYXIATED IN PHILADELPHIA WHILE MRS Blanche McEwen, 14, a bride of three weeks, was found asphyxiated in her home basement last night by gas heater fumes blown out by a draught according to police.
Roanoke April 28 Walter L Booth an 18 year old farm boy remains paralyzed after an operation caused lung collapse. Friends keep his breath flowing by cuising his arms and offering ice cream and cigarettes as doctors warn of likely death. He talks intermittently to attendants amid coughing fits and a cold. The accident was a motor vehicle crash that damaged his spine and affected throat nerves.
CLTSUURGOL April 28. John A Kell, 72, sentenced to six and a half years for embezzling 643,745 from the Uarngevntreet Company, is deemed ill to begin serving. Dr C J Bis of Allegheny County jail aid and Dr W W G Macachland of Thy Mercy Hospital told Judge Ford the hearing should be continued until next Tuesday when physicians will assess Bell’s condition.
Police in Philadelphia believe they are closing in on the strangler who beat and strangled Mrs. William McConnell in her home. The victim was found under a bed with a gag and blood leading to her room. diamonds and jewelry were stolen and a neighbor described a hurried man seen entering and leaving the house. If the suspect is captured, authorities will pursue charges in the death and robbery.
A postponement due to cold weather set back the New York at Boston game. Patridge of Brooklyn homered in the first inning of Philadelphia versus Brooklyn, while Hartnett of Chicago connected for a homer in the second inning of Chicago against Pittsburgh.
