Thousands witnessed Col Clarence Chamberlin as he taxied and then took off in a damaged tire delay for New Castle. The Trans Atlantic flyer spoke to audiences in Warren and spoke of future air routes with Atlantic air and passenger service. The event was hosted by the Corn Planter Post of the American Legion with three service clubs assisting.
Kane’s Fairest Daughter named to represent the city as Miss Kane after a contest at the Temple Theatre. Miss Anderson chosen from a dozen entrants to compete at Connell Lake this summer.
A Warren High School survey by the Junior Chamber of Commerce shows 666 typewriters in use across Warren borough. Underwood leads with 267 machines, L. C. Smith 212, including 175 at New Process. Royal 128, Remington 24, Oliver 23, Woostock 7, Coven 2, Monarch 1, Jewstt 1, Harris 1. The count excludes typewriters in the Warren High School commercial department but includes those in the school office.
The fuselage of the Sperry airplane used by Clarence Chamberlin to fly to Warren was the same craft that Lord Sperry, English inventor of the model, crashed in the English Channel four years earlier. Chamberlin said the wrecked plane had been bought and reconditioned before his departure for New Castle.
Coronel Clarence Chamberlin spoke at the American Legion in Chief Cornplanter Post rooms, with about two hundred guests served by the Ladies Auxiliary. He praised the turnout as a sign the group could earn a new home, was introduced by Ben Kinnear, and received with hearty applause. Continued on Page Nine.
Basra reports French aviators Dietdoune Costes and Joseph Le Brix landed at 11 A M from Karachi and left for Aleppo an hour later. They expect to reach Paris on Saturday night, signaling a swift post voyage return after a stopover in the Middle East.
In Orange New Jersey on April 12 Police Judge Edward L. Davis ruled that flowers are not vegetables. Vendors Ernest Hausman and Samuel Greenberg were arrested and contended that flowers were farm products exempt from licensing to sell.
Senate continues farm relief debate as committees probe cotton and coal topics. Commerce panel opens hearings on a government works bill amid unemployment concerns. Finance, interstate, and other panels pursue reduction, coal, and futures topics. House advances legislative establishment, flood control, cotton futures regulation, and motor bus bill inquiries.
A bomb hidden in an electric lamp in Piazza Giulio Cesare exploded as King Victor Emanuel’s royal carriage passed. The attack killed 14 and injured about 49, disrupting inauguration plans at Milan fair and triggering a citywide search by police for the attackers. The King continued the program, La Scala performance canceled, and officials urged unity under Mussolini’s decree.
A Como dispatch reports authorities uncovered an infernal machine attached to railway tracks used by the Mussolini train from Turin to Rome. The timing of the discovery was not released. Mussolini also met with Parker Gilbert, the American Dawes reparations official, in Rams after Easter.
The July 6 1797 original survey of the Corn Planter Indian Reservation will be included in County Treasurer E Waid’s rearranged wall records in the courthouse. A worn former jewel was pasted on a new sheet and framed as a gift from Curtis M Shawkey. Waid added a new frame for a steel engraving of Henry M Rouse Warren county beneficiary, and framed a photo of James L Stuart secretary of state highways.

April L2 late returns show Frank C Lowden securing 47 of 61 Illinois delegates to the Republican national convention. North Carolina votes uninstructed per state GOP decision. Senator Porter H Dale of Vermont says his state will send a solid delegation backing President Coolidge. Senator Thomas J Walsh tells Whitfield Tuck he is willing to run on the Democratic primary ballot in Massachusetts.
The Advertising club of Warren will hold its first organized meeting at 8 p m Tuesday in the Chamber of Commerce rooms inside the post office building. Elisha Robinson Jr temporary chairman. The nominating committee report will be acted upon. Nominated directors include Chester Anderson W H Cannon E W Garrison Martin Hill H M Mohr Elisha Robinson Jr and William H Wright. Directors elected will later choose officers.
Col. Clarence Chamberlin spoke in Warren about the German flyers attempting a westward Atlantic crossing. He warned that headwinds could force delays or abort the mission, risking fuel and potentially preventing a New York landing even if weather cooperates.
The Junkers plane with three fliers set off from Ireland toward Newfoundland in a bold bid to cross the North Atlantic. Visibility was poor but the craft flew at about 76 mph, carrying 45 hours of fuel and no life boats or radio, with plans to reach Mitchel Field by Friday noon if winds hold. The crew included Baron Von Huenefeld and two others, bidding farewell before a crowd that included the President and Mrs. Congrave.
