Read by sailors aboard the Liberte at anchor in the roadstead, the French battleship exploded fatally, killing 226 crew aboard the Liberte and wounding 50 on the Democratie. The nearby Verite and Republique also suffered fatalities and damage while efforts to fight the fire continued.

The event followed the death of the wealthy financier by just over a month. Miss Margaret Clemens of Charles City Iowa served as maid of honor with Wayne Bogue of Detroit as best man.
In Indianapolis on September 28 Daniel Burns was robbed by two men who took $11 and his false teeth. Burns said he cared little for the money but wanted his teeth returned. The assailants searched his vest pocket, found the teeth, and fled into the night.
John K. Zook aged 80 of Brownstown and proprietor of Zook's woolen mills committed death by own action in the attic of his mill. He hanged himself with a woolen rope he made, fastening one end to a rafter and kicking away the box he stood on. Authorities say his mind was unsettled.
Pennsylvania Auditor General A E Sisson declares counties may not seek state appropriations for fairs permitting games of chance. Reports he ordered show any fair allowing shell games wheels or similar devices will lead to withholding warrants. Capitol Hill was told agents have monitored this month’s fairs.

Irvin F. Ellis, age 12, through his next friend William Ellis, sues Tien Roberts for $10,000 after Roberts' dog allegedly attacked Ellis's dog and Roberts fired, wounding Ellis in the foot instead of the dogs. The incident occurred as the farmers from Polk township passed Roberts' home.
