Leo M. Frank is resentenced to be hanged on Tuesday June 22 for the murder of Mary Phagan. He declares his innocence saying no guilty knowledge exists and that only an appellate tribunal has ruled. he asserts his exoneration lies in the future and that he wants to live.
In Syracuse on May 10 four of five motions to strike testimony in Theodore Roosevelt libel suit against William Barnes were denied. The court kept Agnew track bills testimony to show Barnes's party dominance, and allowed Roosevelt and other testimony about alleged cross party dealings. Justice Andrews refused to strike some records and defined corruption as not necessarily pecuniary in law.
Rev. J. M. Life former North East Methodist pastor sues Dayton Carnahan and Lillian Yale for 5000 each alleging published statements alleging he is a dope fiend. He claims he has resided in Pennsylvania for two years and maintained good character as a gospel minister. The suit was filed after a long delay with counsel L. E. Torry for the plaintiff and J. M. Force for defendants.
Washington May 9 The United States faces an undetermined action after the Lusitania sinking with over a hundred American lives lost. President Wilson weighs legal and humanitarian angles unsure of any move until reports from Berlin and London arrive. Telegrams urge severe action while some advocate war, others demand firm diplomacy or a warning to protect passengers.
President Wilson addressed about 4 000 newly naturalized citizens in Philadelphia urging loyalty to the United States over birth nation. He urged thinking of humanity first, warned against dividing people into groups, and praised America as a force for peace. Security for Wilson was tight with 750 police guarding the visit.
Peking May 10. Plenipotentiaries from Japan and China have agreed to draft a treaty after settling demands. Terms cover Shantung transfers and no cession to third powers, Manchuria rights for Japanese use and advisers, opening treaty ports, Mongolian loans, and joint Chinese Japanese ventures.
McKean County licenses totaling 63 were granted by Judge Bouton at license court in Smethport on Monday afternoon. No opposition appeared and the entire list received approval. No new applications were filed. 53 retail licenses, nine wholesale licenses, and one brewery license were approved.
Harrisburg May 11 The Pennsylvania Senate passed finally by 33 to 16 a bill repealing the full crew law and authorizing the public service commission to require railroads to employ an adequate number of men on trains. Critics Burke of Allegany and Beidleman of Dauphin spoke against it. the measure now goes to the governor whose stance is not yet known.
London May 11 Cunard liner Mauretania will not sail for the United States on May 29. No Cunard liner will sail for New York on May 15, the date Lusitania was to begin her return trip. Cancellation follows the sinking of the Lusitania.
Bermuda participants are reminded that Saturday marks Prosperity Day and to take part in the 59,000 vote offer. The call emphasizes civic involvement and a large turnout goal.
The Cunard liner Lusitania with 4000 aboard was torpedoed off Head Kinsale near Ireland. Rescue efforts saved some, but 500 to 600 are listed as accounted for. many bodies feared lost. The ship vanished within minutes after the attack amid warnings against publishing guesses.
Count von Bernstorff, the German ambassador, visited the state department and voiced deep regret that war events caused the loss of American lives. A Berlin note blamed Britain's plan to starve civilians and promised sympathy while awaiting further instructions.
Indianapolis May 12 David M Parry ex president of the National Manufacturers Association died today. He had long engaged in the manufacture of carriages and automobiles and was about sixty three years old.
