In a decisive result, Sibley secures the party nomination for congress with a 660 vote majority. Franklin man wins over Representative Nelson P Wheeler in a separate contest.
Joseph C. Sibley of Franklin won the 28th district congressional race over Nelson P. Wheeler of Forest County. Sibley led by about 500 votes district wide, boosted by a strong Venango county showing totals: Sibley 2,583 in Venango and 976 of 1,265 in Franklin. Wheeler carried Warren county and several wards but fell short overall. Oil City turnout was low with Wheeler’s vote not much larger than expected. Franklin endorsed Sibley decisively with a 687 vote margin.
Joseph A. Schofield defeats Arthur W. Dennison about two to one, with a 1,470 majority. Democrats nominate Breene for Congress Beshlin for State Senate Kraer for Assembly. Prohibition party also fields candidates. Despite partisan sentiment, polls stay orderly and constables maintain calm with few exceptions.
Bradford June 6 Charles E Patton of Curwensville defeats Hon Lewis Emery Jr of Bradford for Representative in Congress in the Twenty first district. Emery wins McKean county by about 1700 but loses Center Clearfield and Cameron counties by sizable margins. Patton likely gains about 1100 plurality after complete returns. McKean county assembly race yields Bell Habgood Redfield and Reznor with Bell and Redfield nominated.
Mercer county results indicate Wheeler leads by about 275 to 285 with final totals pending. In Sibley’s favor in Mercer were Sibley 157 to Wheeler 95, plus wins in Greenville 428 to 209 and South Sharon 314 to 2153. Benjamin Jarrett wins State Senate by 1200 plus, with Dallas and Martin nominated for Assembly. all favor local option.
London reports a revival of the guess that the Duke of Connaught may succeed Earl Grey as Canada’s governor general. The Duke is said to be keen on the post, viewing his military career as finished and desiring a major administrative role in Canada.
Frank M. Knapp of Warren won the State Senate nomination for the Warren Venango Crawford district. He carried Warren county by about 2200 votes and Venango by about 250, carrying Oil City and most smaller towns. Dr. Foster carried Franklin by 230, winning all precincts except the Third ward.
In Forest County Wheeler carries the county by 370 votes. W J Campbell of Tionesta wins the Assembly nomination over incumbent A R Mechling of Clarington.
John Lofgren, a Jamestown metal worker with a wife and five children, was killed when Southbound trolley No 52 struck him while he lay across the track near the D A V P station in North Warren. Coroner records no inquest. body identified later by Mr. Pearson of Jackson Run.
Unofficial Elk county totals show Wheeler 2150 and Sibley 1012 giving Wheeler a county wide lead of 1138. Wheeler carries every district in the county and officials expect little change in the final tally.
Eight year old Howard Johnson fell into ten feet of water near the embankment in Chester river. A Newfoundland, which had accompanied him, plunged overboard and saved the sinking boy just as he went under for a third time. The dog delivered him to shore where the mother, Mrs. Sarah Johnson, embraced the dog and fainted.
London reports a Lisbon dispatch that Cordeiro an influential Republican confessed to using agents to sow disloyalty in the army and recruit NCOs for revolutionary propaganda. Courts of inquiry are held in implicated regiments as many men are arrested and imprisoned.
In Erie Pa June 5 with all 52 Erie county districts counted Samuel B Bayle loses the Republican renomination for assemblyman in the Third District by E H Wilcox of Edinboro by seventeen votes Bayle had sought the state senate seat to succeed Auditor General A B Sisson but withdrew in favor of Henry A Clark if elected he would have aimed for the speakership.
Philander H. Boynton a Dunkirk piano salesman for George H Graf Furniture Company was fatally injured when struck by a northbound Buffalo and Lake Erie trolley car while driving with his wife on Central avenue. He died at Brooks Memorial Hospital Friday morning. The accident at Central and Newton left him unconscious with skull fracture and brain concussion. The driver Mr Herman Kearsteadt said he applied brakes after seeing the carriage about a hundred feet away. The young couple had married days earlier in Warren Pa. and had lived in Dunkirk only a few weeks as Mr Boynton worked for Graf. Funeral plans moved to Warren for burial with relatives from Warren and Dunkirk attending. Legal action against the traction company was anticipated with a grand jury review and suit by attorney E D Warner.
Dalzell leads by about 400 after returns show 405 vote majority across all but one district. Two Flynn candidates renominated. A W Powell defeats James M Clark for State Senate. In the 44th district M C Kelley defeats W H Heath, Oliver candidate. Black accuses Harvey Evans of counting five Dalzell ballots in a local alderman’s court.
