Power in a Lightning Flash
Dr. Charles P. Steinmetz of General Electric explains lightning's power and light output. A single flash could illuminate an area two miles square, requiring about 13 000 horsepower for a second, though the eye perceives the glow for a tenth of a second. He notes lightning is static electricity formed in thunderclouds, not like electrical machinery, and describes charge behavior on a charged surface.
