A religious rhapsody extols the eternal God as sovereign over all creation. It venerates the Creator for bringing existence from nothing, the sun’s life giving light, and the Son’s salvific role. The prayer seeks praise, humility, and intimate fellowship with the God of love and power.
Whang the miller, eager for riches, dreams of a buried pan of gold beneath his mill foundation. He and his wife dig frantically, only to collapse the mill and ruin their fortune, illustrating the peril of envy and greed. The piece interleaves a moral meditation on restraint with a satirical aside about a prolific printer’s worries.
An old tale of Washington Irving involving a wealthy daughter, suitor, and a Presbyterian minister Dr Creighton. A dowry tied to insanity leads to the daughter becoming a raving madwoman, the mansion turned to an asylum, and Creighton performing the burial service. Also included are short notes on manure for orchards and social observations on gender in a separate column.

A melodramatic chapter opens with a beauty in a mountain log cabin, a rogue intruding, a rejected vow, and a frantic chase. The man, deranged by love, attempts self harm and ends up in a stream, while the woman resumes her chores. Years later a sheriff and a fatal fall tie the tale to hardship and fate.
A Mississippi reminiscence recalls the 1828 Natchez duel between Col. Jim Bowie and a Louisiana challenger, with seconds surgeons and a crowd aboard a steamboat watching as knives and pistols met. Bowie, wounded, lingered months before recovery. Other items note Lake Street’s rising front and a grand hydraulic spectacle, Mrs. Mary Chestnut as vice regent of the Mount Vernon Association, moral lessons on small things, and Niagara tour humor.
