The Clergyman's Secret Continues in Longville
In this installment the narrator deepens his disguise to rob John Longwell's treasury while growing close to Mary Longwell. A staged pheasant shoot ends with a gunshot wound to the narrator, Comstock torn between pity and crime, and Mary care, nursing him back to health as he suspects Comstock and Hastings of plotting. The narrative hints at a forthcoming confrontation: an anonymous offer to recover the money prompts a return to Longville and renewed suspicions about Comstock.
