A mid night fire at McCrady's grocery on Railroad Street sparked rapid spread to Smith's billiard room, the gas company's office, and Kahle's Novelty Store. Flames reached Amann's tailor shop and Dennigan's meat market before being contained. Losses exceed $6,000 with many uninsured. J T Allman of Juniata named gubernatorial candidate for the People's party. Harrispore convention also nominated a full ticket and sent sympathy to Coxey.
Washington May 1 Coxeys Commonweal march ended in a police interruption near the capitol. About 10 000 people filled the plaza as Browne and Jones were arrested for disorderly conduct, Coxey escaped. The crowd surged again after the arrests and Coxey pressed for a license to camp, with General Coxey promising continued mobilization.
Coxey, still in command, says the army remains idle but vows to stay until Congress passes his proposed bills. He refuses to lead his recruits away, asserting the protest continues to pressure lawmakers.
Extracts from an anti vivisection gathering at the Humane Congress in Chicago recount papers by Mary F Lovell and others urging laws against vivisection. Narratives describe cruelties, Hindooism views on animals, and Italian practices, with notes on Cardinal Gibbon celebrations and Colorado women pushing prohibition aligned with suffrage. Five days of races, bicycles included, capped the event.
An 1893 plan split global refined oil markets between Russian refiners and Standard Oil. The syndicate, backed by Nobel Brothers, the Rothschilds, and the Russian government, set quotas and a five year pact to control worldwide refining and transportation. J A Cadwallader B G Henne George Sill and a Jamestown gentleman own the Forest Grove well twelve miles below Pittsburgh. It produced forty barrels per hour on Friday and thirty five on Saturday revealing a peculiar history in oil land. The 400 acre lease has oil from the hundred foot sand, with Fort Pitt Gas Co owning gas rights. If oil is found the oil company pays dailing costs and owns the well. if gas is found the gas company pays. The gas company drilled to the fourth sand and produced a gusher, then the lease may add large sums to the owners’ bank accounts.

Seven thousand unemployed men marched through Cleveland after speeches at Monroe Mental Square. Rioters attacked a motor car, wrecked another vehicle, and fired nearly 100 shots. A streetcar was wrecked on Pearl Street. police faced mob violence with rough handling and many injuries but no fatalities reported. L Rosensweig of Erie was in Warren on business.
