From a Close Alliance to Open Hostility and Thence to Indifference

A special Washington report examines how relations between journalists and Congressmen have swung from close ties to hostility and indifference. It traces cycles from 1868 75 corruption era through Grant era scandals to Garfield Hayes and Harrison administrations, noting key press figures and lawmakers known for openness or reticence, and highlights enduring veteran correspondents and influential editors shaping coverage.

James Montgomery Bailey The Danbury News Man

Special correspondence from Daxsery Connecticut recalls James Montgomery Bailey known as Monte Bailey, originator of a humorous Danbury News style. He rose from carpentry to editor of The Jeffersonian renamed Danbury News, boosting circulation and authoring popular sketches and books. He declined $25,000 for lectures though later found success touring and lecturing with Bret Harte remarking on his talkative appeal. Bailey remained humble, saying most treasures are in heaven, and left a legacy as a kind, approachable figure who never turned away a beggar.
