Washington July 17. Democratic conferees remain unable to agree on key tariff provisions including sugar coal metal woolen and cotton schedules. The full committee met but no reporting plan was set, with a report of disagreement likely to trigger a prolonged Senate debate.
Wasumerox July 17 The Senate approved a one million dollar amendment to the agricultural appropriation bill after a long debate. The final vote stood 27 to 24 with four Democrats and four Populists voting with Republicans in favor and all negative votes from Democrats. The agricultural bill then passed.
A gun caisson exploded during cavalry drill at Grand and Oakwood. Four artillerymen were killed and many were injured. Horses were killed, windows broken, and houses damaged. The cause remains unexplained.
A heated clash erupts between the excise board and Everett house proprietors over transferring the license from O C Wallace & Co. to Mrs Viola D Everett wife of M N Everett. The board adjourned to August 11 as the hotel loses money and taxpayers discuss board pressure and debt avoidance.
The West New York and Pennsylvania Railroad announces a low rate excursion to Niagara Falls on Tuesday July 24. A special train departs Warren at 751 AM arriving Buffalo 12 noon and Niagara Falls 1 PM. Return trains leave Niagara Falls 800 PM arriving Buffalo 845 PM, with seven hours at the Falls or nine hours in Buffalo. Tickets valid on regular trains until July 26.

Moses Beecher cashier of the First National Bank Warren died at his Water street home after a brief illness of heart failure. Born July 26 1827 in Ellicottville N Y he lived in Dunkirk Detroit then Warren where he helped establish banking with hardware trade becoming first national bank cashier from its inception. Survived by wife Emily Downing and two sons Professor Charles E Beecher Yale College and T Beecher Warren, three sisters in Dunkirk. Funeral at Episcopal church Wednesday officiated by Rev J Townsend Russell, with choir and psalm Nearer My God to Thee. buried Oakland. Pallbearers listed.

Mrs. Peter M. Smith died by self inflicted hanging at her Fifth Street home last Friday. Ailing for years, she left a husband and four children, while her daughter in law Mrs. Dr. M. T. Smith visited to take her to Ludlow. Funeral held with Dr. Kummer officiating at Quaker Hill cemetery, Glade.
