Three thousand workers at the Homestead iron and steel works returned to work after a compromise that cut wages for about sixteen hundred. The workers had resisted Pinkerton forces and organized across England Scotland and Wales to block foreign labor. Armament and rocket signaling systems were used to plan rapid actions if needed. Leaders were calm and long prepared. The settlement averted bloodshed and a reign of terror in the area.

A new general dog tax has been signed into law by Governor Beaver. Owners must have dogs assessed for taxation, with rates of fifty cents to one dollar depending on sex, and personal property of the owners assessed as well. Funds first cover sheep losses due to dogs, otherwise the money goes to the school fund.

A skeleton found in a Falls of French Creek cave yielded a faded manuscript dated February 20, 1778 by Arthur Carrington of Richmond Va.
