A physician recounts a confession from an elderly landsman and murderer who, with his brother in law, killed a raftsman to steal nails and a chest of goods. They disposed of the body, fled to Pittsburg, and later the brother-in-law drowned in Cincinnati. The killer later dies on his bed admitting the crime, saying I feel better now.
Col McClure of the Philadelphia Times and Lincoln's private secretary Nicolay spar over who Lincoln preferred as his running mate in his second term. They contend Lincoln favored a Southern man, Andrew Johnson, over Hannibal Hamlin, a claim unlikely to be verifiable.
The Sixteenth Regiment of the National Guard plans major officer changes this year. Col. W J Huling’s term ends, Maj Thomas R Cowell has resigned due to ill health, and Captain Fox of Bradford has stepped down as lieutenant colonel. Adjutant Henry McSweeney seeks the mayor’s seat, Captain W Horton of Ridgway aims for lieutenant colonel, with more candidates likely. The election, not yet officially announced, likely occurs at the brigade encampment at Arnold's Station near Hulton on the A V R R in August.
The Democratic convention nominated James Roy as sheriff candidate, praised as the strongest, most popular young Democrat in the county. The contest with Republicans will be close, with Roy backed by oil men and farmers and broad GOP support. James Madison Jackson died at the old homestead in Conewango township on Friday July 10 1891 at 2 p.m. at nearly 73 after a long, active farming life. He leaves four children and was a lifelong Democrat and devout Methodist. His funeral was July 12 at the old homestead with Rev. Rankin officiating and burial in Oakland cemetery beside his son Willie.
The veteran river division conductor Pap Richardson, famed as a jovial featherweight on the W N P road between Olean and Oil City, has died in Erie. A LepGER man saw him Sunday and Richardson said he would continue many years of service, remaining as full of jokes as ever.
A rare mirage lit the Rochester sky Saturday morning from the Powers building tower. The lake appeared within half a mile, St Michael's church a quarter mile away, with Canada’s shore visible beyond the lake. A gravel train moved along the bank, and workers seemed to load the cars as trees on the bank stood out clearly for nearly an hour.
A Buffalo press dispatch dated July 14 reports William G. Hevenor dry goods merchant at 259 Main Street making a general assignment to Hudson Ansley of Salamanca. The move follows hard times with preferences listed as 000. Hevenor has stores in Salamanca and Bradford and expresses optimism that business may resume.
